The Bellator Fighting Championships kicks off their Summer Series light heavyweight tournament with Bellator 71 on June 22nd. Former Strikeforce heavyweight Brett Rogers will also make his debut inside the Bellator cage.
Eight light heavyweights will begin their quest to capture the tournament title with three straight wins. The winner will earn a title shot against current champion Christian “Tonton” M’Pumbu. The quarterfinal pairings for the tournament will highlight the main card:
- Attila Vegh vs. Zelg Galesic
- Travis Wiuff vs. Chris Davis
- Richard Hale vs. Beau Tribolet
- Emanuel Newton vs. Roy Boughton
Rogers (11-4, 1 NC) will square off against training partner Kevin Asplund (15-1). Rogers will be looking to get his MMA career back on track after recording just one win in his last six bouts. Since dropping his professional debut Asplund has proceeded to win 15 consecutive bouts. He last competed in July 2011 when he defeated Reese Hernandez by split decision.
Bellator 71 takes place from the Mountaineer Casino, Racetrack and Resort in Chester, West Virginia. The main card will be televised live on MTV2 and EPIX HD beginning at 8:00pm ET while the preliminary card will be streamed free on Spike.com at 7:00pm ET.
