Cristiane Santos, the undisputed best female MMA fighter has tested positive for stanozolol metabolites. The California State Athletic Commission on Friday announced the governing body has suspended her license for one year.
Her recent title defense against Hiroko Yamanka will be changed to a no decision after her urine sample for that fight came up dirty. She is now 11-1.
Steroids have been an ongoing problem in the MMA world. Recent steroid stories include Thiago Silva, Chael Sonnen, Josh Barnett and Ken Shamrock. Perhaps the CSAC and other commissions need to begin a stricter and escalating punishment scale similar to the MLB.
This will be also in interesting matter for Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker. We all hope that he will take a hard line stance, but with Santos and Gina Carano being the only recognizable female fighters, it isn't likely.
