Contrary to popular belief, Chris Weidman (pictured) is all for having superfights in MMA. However, you just simply need to insert him in place of reigning UFC middleweight king Anderson Silva.
The biggest box office bout the UFC could arguably arrange would feature Silva and light heavyweight champion Jon Jones, with a Silva scrap against welterweight camp Georges St-Pierre coming in a close second. In either case, Silva is the common denominator so both fantasy fights would be ruined with a loss by the Brazilian.
In steps Weidman, who has already apologized for having to play spoiler when he challenges Silva for his throne on July 6.
According to the UFC’s Fighter Rankings (we’ll shelve the debate regarding the legitimacy and relevancy behind those pecking orders for another day), Silva and Jones are the game’s top two pound-for-pound fighters, respectively.
If Weidman is able to serve “The Spider” an upset special at UFC 162 – or should we say, WHEN, since he’s already promised to dethrone the Octagon’s most decorated champion – the “All-American” says he’d be down to try and take down the UFC’s P4P runner-up next.
“I mean, I’ve got to beat Anderson first,” Weidman stated during Tuesday’s conference call of possibly meeting Jones. “That’s the first big step. Whatever the UFC fans and UFC want to do and the fight they want to see, I’m definitely willing to do.”
Ready or not, superfights, Weidman claims he’s coming.
