With each passing interview, the fantasy fight with UFC kings Anderson Silva (Pictured) and Georges St-Pierre appears to be inching closer to fact. In an exclusive interview on FUEL TV, UFC president Dana White said welterweight interim champ Carlos Condit is the biggest roadblock wedged between the mixed martial arts icons.
“I think we’re pretty close,” White stated. “I mean if Georges St-Pierre beats Condit, that could be next fight. If that fight happens, it’ll probably be at Dallas Texas stadium.”
In recent weeks, Silva’s camp has expressed great interest in fighting GSP, and for the first time, St-Pierre has also said he’d be down to accept the challenge of facing the most decorated champion in Octagon history.
“These guys want to fight each other now,” White shared. “I think that if you’re a fighter and you’ve dominated as long as Anderson has, and you’ve been great as long as Georges has, you finally say ‘You know what? I want to test myself. I think I can beat this guy.”
The only significant question remaining is which weight class will host the monumental scrap. White addressed that issue Tuesday night, as well.
“At one point it sounded like Anderson wanted to go to 170 and take Georges’ welterweight title,” White expressed. “That’s what he was talking at one point. Then it was 180 as a catchweight because Georges doesn’t want to go to 185, he’s going to stay at 170. He said, ‘If I had to make the move to go to ’85, I’d have to stay at ’85.’
“We figured that a 180-pound catchweight makes sense.”
The good news for MMA fanboys who have been crying all the livelong day for the blockbuster bout is St-Pierre is nearly a 4-to-1 odds-on favorite to steamroll Condit at UFC 154 and unify the 170-pound crown.
The two will tango November 17th in St-Pierre’s backyard of Montreal. All eyes will be on the Octagon that night, including the eyes of “The Spider.”
