Ladies and gentlemen, meet your new UFC welterweight top contender. According to company president Dana White, Johny Hendricks (Pictured) punched his #1 contender ticket when he punched Martin Kampmann into unconsciousness at UFC 154. “He looked damn good [Saturday night],” White expressed at the post-fight press conference. “It was a replica of the Jon Fitch fight. He even landed it in the same spot [as the Fitch fight]. “It was impressive, so I would say yes, he is [the 170-pound top contender].” That’s certainly music to Hendricks’ ears. The wrestler-turned-slugger has been quietly, yet viciously, been making his way up the welterweight ranks. Last night’s lights out victory was arguably his most impressive to date. “Any time, for some reason, whenever my left hand lands, it always feels solid,” Hendricks boasted. “I don’t have to hit the whole chin to lay somebody out, and that’s always nice to rely on. I’m a wrestler and I can knock people out. That’s pretty sweet, huh?” Yes, my bearded friend. That is indeed a deadly combination. Hendricks is now prepared to unleash his arsenal against the division’s G.O.A.T. “I made my case,” Hendricks said in closing. “[Kampmann is] a tough fighter. I knew he was going to be and I finished him. The only thing left is, hopefully, Georges St-Pierre.”
