No, not that superfight against reigning UFC light heavyweight king Jon Jones. Of course that, and a potential blockbuster bout with UFC welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre, is off the table now that Anderson Silva (pictured) lost his middleweight crown to Chris Weidman on Saturday at UFC 162. However, UFC president Dana White hopes a Silva-Weidman sequel will do far better than not only the original, which White claimed was trending over 800,000 pay-per-view buys, but surpass what Silva could have done against Jones or St-Pierre. “That’s a good question,” White responded when asked if Silva rematching the man who abruptly ended his seven-year reign would be as box office as any long discussed fantasy fight. “Silva vs. Weidman II might be bigger than [the Silva vs. Jones] superfight we were talking about. Silva vs. Weidman II is [expletive] massive. It’s huge, and it’s not just huge here, it’s huge all over the world. “It’s a massive fight. But, on the flipside, Jon Jones vs. Anderson Silva was a massive, massive fight, too. I don’t know. You know what I hope the answer to that question is? [Expletive] yes, I hope it’s that big!” Prior to last night’s upset special, a scrap between Silva and Jones was arguably the biggest fight the UFC could arrange, with Silva facing GSP coming in as a close second. There was even talk of an enormous venue like Dallas’ Cowboys Stadium hosting the gig. However, now that the king has been dethroned, fans can officially kill all that chatter. Much like how boxing had to shelve Floyd Mayweather versus Manny Pacquiao after “Pac-Man” embarked on his two-fight skid. Clearly, Silva vs. Weidman II (my apologies, Weidman vs. Silva II) won’t warrant Cowboys Stadium. However, the rematch could easily score the UFC one of their largest, if not the largest, PPV numbers in company history. Although, much like the other superfight jabber that came before it, this too could also be put to rest if Silva stands firm on not wanting to rematch Weidman or ever competing for another UFC title.
