After a 15-year career fighting for multiple organizations, Frank Shamrock officially announced his retirement from MMA on Saturday.

Shamrock’s announcement came during the telecast of Strikeforce’s “Fedor vs. Werdum” event, where he addressed the crowd and credited martial arts with saving his life.

“It was an honor to bleed for you, to break my bones for you, and to entertain you,” Shamrock said.  “I’m someone who can honestly say that fighting is more than a sport.  It’s saved my life. And because of this, I revere the martial arts, and I consider it the core of my existence.”

Shamrock’s stellar career began in Japan becoming a King of Pancrase in the 1990′s.  In 1997 he began fighting for the UFC and became the organization’s first middleweight champion.

The last few years of his career, Shamrock has fought for the now-defunct EliteXC and Strikeforce, where he also serves as broadcast color commentator.

Shamrock last saw action in April 2009 where he lost to Nick Diaz by TKO.

He finishes his career with an overall record of 23-10-2.
