As the old adage goes, “Time flies when you’re having fun.” That’s probably why time stood still for Andrei Arlovski (pictured) when he was getting mauled by Anthony Johnson at the end of the first round of their World Series of Fighting 2 scrap. According to Jackson’s MMA, Arlovski’s team, the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board hired an incompetent timekeeper because the opening frame of Saturday’s main event lasted several critical seconds longer than it should have. “The NJ athletic commission was worried about the World Series of Fighting getting a new canvas and new corner pads for the cage they almost canceled the fight Saturday night,” Jackson’s MMA posted of their official Facebook page. “Unfortunately they forgot to get a time keeper that was trained properly. 1st round 5min 8 sec in the Andrei fight. “A devastating blow was landed after the 5min mark. It’s amazing how so much time is spent with over regulating but the simple things can cost dearly.” The clock reads seven seconds the last time it’s shown on the screen – although announcer Todd Harris says there’s 10 seconds remaining. Based on my highly unofficial iPhone stopwatch, Johnson drops Arlovski with a right hook 8.4 seconds later, which would be 1.4 ticks after the round should have ended. Johnson continues his vicious assault on the canvas for another 5.9 seconds. That’s nearly six seconds of unnecessary punishment “The Pit Bull” endured before losing a (29-28, 29-28, 29-28) unanimous decision. Arlovski suffered a broken jaw during the attack, which Jackson’s MMA claims happened well after the first round horn should have blared. The New Jersey State Athletic Control Board has yet to address the issue and have not responded to our inquiries.
