Prior to Saturday’s highly-anticipated debut on FOX, UFC president Dana White admitted his worst nightmare was if either Junior dos Santos (Pictured) or Cain Velasquez were to suffer a pre-fight injury. Well, it appears dos Santos entered the scrap with a torn meniscus in his left knee but managed to fight through the pain to capture his dream.
The newly-minted heavyweight champion briefly touched on the injury during his post-fight celebratory speech.
“Cain Velasquez for sure was my toughest opponent,” dos Santos stated.” I was afraid to fight with him because he’s very tough. I wasn’t 100 percent for this fight, so I was scared.”
The Brazilian went into some detail about his injury during the post-fight press conference, however revealed much more after the presser wrapped.
According to JDS, he tore his meniscus during jiu jitsu practice 11 days prior to showtime. He claims he couldn’t walk on it and required the use of crutches to get around two days after suffering the injury.
The 27-year-old added that his final week of training was limited to extensive rehab and working in a pool to minimize the impact on his knee.
Dos Santos will soon see a specialist to determine whether he will require surgery. Although, he was hopeful some R&R and additional rehabilitation will get the job done.
