I was already sick of hearing about Chris Weidman vs. Anderson Silva, two weeks before they even fought. After the knockout heard around the world… its gotten even worse. All the speculation and conspiracy theories popped up from would-be journalists and bloggers expressing their feelings, instead of doing actual reporting. MMA has seen media ‘professionals’ break character before. Remember when a chubby and undefeated Russian named Fedor lost a fight to Fabricio Werdum? ‘I told you so’ may have been trending on Twitter, because every Fedor detractor in existence finally got their chance to throw the proverbial pie (Thank you, Mr. Ranallo) in people’s faces. I imagine it’s like losing a cat after 10 years. All was normal on Monday… but by Tuesday, everything had changed.
The people that assume Anderson Silva threw the fight are absolutely ridiculous. He did however, act like a complete *******. What’s crazy is how quickly people seem to forget that Anderson ALWAYS acts like this during his fights. Normally, Silva doesn’t get knocked out and he wins the fight; all the while, being praised as a fighting genius. His antics against Cote, Leites, and finally Demian Maia were what prompted many fans to NEVER buy another UFC ppv again. Nobody wanted to risk spending hard earned money watching, at any time, what could be another Abu Dhabi debacle. Or maybe that was just me. His fight with Weidman was well on the way to being a replay of UFC 112, but he got his lights turned out and many people still haven’t stopped laughing.I don’t hate Anderson Silva. I don’t love Chris Weidman. I love good fights. I hate bad ones. Simple enough, right? Nope. When one of the most dominant fighters in all of MMA gets put to sleep, people will have a lot to say. This is especially true if he got knocked out while acting like a fool. Silva went to bed early, Weidman won the belt, and the internet simultaneously exploded. The UFC site crashed. All MMA forums stopped to a crawl. Sports stars and top actors got online and expressed their highly uneducated opinions. It was a momentous occasion like Mark McGwire breaking the Maris record, Jordan hitting the game winner in the NBA Finals, or when Jwow attacked The Situation in Snookie’s defense. The knockout has been pretty well received by most people in the know, or at least not the complete invalids. There is a lot of stupidity, however. People are trying to get hits by writing a ridiculous article based on ludicrous conspiracy theories. There are usually some Twitter trolls tweeting out false rumors as well, more than anyone could believe.Since the fight I’ve heard:Weidman was tiredRenzo Gracie bet $1,000,000 on WeidmanWeidman had nothing for Silva and got lucky with the punchSilva took a diveSilva gave up because he felt Weidman’s strengthAnderson was forced to sell his belt by Nike who threatened to withdraw sponsorshipAnderson tapped to the kneebar attemptJustin Bieber is a good singerAll kinds of malarkey has been vomited into our laps through the media and non of it holds any weight. What really happened was:Anderson Silva and Chris Weidman fought. Silva was overly confident after years of dominating his competition and wanted to put on what he felt was a show. While trying to show how entertaining he could be, he got hit by a guy with bricks for fists. Game. Set. Match. New middleweight champion, Chris Weidman. The rematch will take place in 5-6 months. Nothing more and nothing less.
