Patricio “Pitbull” Freire’s title shot will have to wait a little longer.
Bellator featherweight champion Pat Curran fractured his orbital bone in training and is out of his upcoming title defense against “Pitbull” at Bellator 73 on August 24th. Curran posted the following statement on his Twitter account, “It was my 2nd to last sparring session and I fractured my orbital… Sorry everyone….The fights off”.
Freire earned his featherweight title shot when he won Bellator’s season four featherweight and was set to challenge then-champion Joe Warren for the title, but “Pitbull” suffered a broken hand in training. With Freire on the sidelines, Curran won Bellator’s 2011 Summer Series featherweight tournament and earned a shot at Warren’s title. Curran then defeated Warren at Bellator 60 by third-round knockout to win the title.
Curran was set to defend the title against Freire at Bellator 73 on August 24th from Harrah’s Tunica Hotel and Casino in Mississippi.
