Don’t get me wrong, the UFC video game is BAD ASS! After waiting so long since the previous version, UFC Undisputed 2009 finally gave gamers a next-generation MMA experience last year. After huge sales and a great reception, the UFC kicked it up another notch by releasing this year’s Undisputed 2010, which featured in-game enhancements and a ridiculously increased roster of fighters.
The UFC game, however, does have some aspects that people find confusing, annoying, and many times both. The main complaint is the gameplay itself, which has been criticized for its resemblance to “pro wrestling” style video games – a button mashers paradise. Also, the new career mode and training camp format are confusing and frustrating even after two straight “sick” days from work.
For a year now we’ve be teased about an upcoming MMA game being released from the Big Bambino of sports video gamery: EA Sports. Most of us know why EA didn’t make the UFC game in the first place. Legend has it, Dana White & Company sought out EA Sports early on. Apparently (according to The Prez) the folks at EA wanted nothing to do with MMA at the time, so the UFC was forced to use wrestling-based THQ to develop the game. And it was after the UFC game sold millions of units faster than expected, EA decided to re-tool their famous Fight Night engine and enter the marketplace.
Obviously, the glaring difference in the games is the roster. The UFC has a VAST majority of the best and most popular fighters under contract, and in their current game. This is a huge deal, as nothing beats playing as your favorite fighter, and chances are they’re only available in the UFC game. There are plenty of other really good fighters out there in other organizations, but the gameplay has to be far superior to make up for the lack of BIG names. Luckily, last week fans were treated to a demo of EA Sports MMA, and were able to get a glimpse of the rival experience.

The first thing you notice when playing the demo, is the controls are completely different. You have to start from scratch – but any experience with the “Fight Night” boxing game series will serve the user well. Strikes are thrown with the right stick, making it impossible to button mash. Submissions require unique hand-eye coordination in a sort of mini-battle with opponents, rather than a test to see who can make the fastest palm circles. Like any game, the controls get more natural with practice, and in time you realize why EA Sports is the undisputed leader in sports games – the gameplay is just THAT good!
The demo provides chance to play as one of 4 fighters: Alistair Overeem, Bobby Lashly, Jason “Mayhem” Miller, and Jake Shields. You’ll have to buy the game to play as Fedor, Randy Couture, Frank Shamrock, Hendo, Shinya Aoki, and more. It’s not just gameplay that sets this title apart from the competition. The following is some of the other promised features:
Create a Shareable Fighter
Upload photos of yourself and use Photo Game Face to create your own fighter. Upload custom fighters for other players to download and share.
Live Broadcast Your Fight
Gamers have the opportunity to broadcast their fights online. Apparently some of these matches will feature live commentary and real world prizes, not to mention online fame and virtual millions…
Feel the Fight Experience
The controller vibrates to simulate body movement when an opponent attempts to transition between positions. This is used to counter when timed properly.
A Complete MMA Experience
Our favorite aspect of this game has to be multiple rule sets. For the Pride fan who craves the head stomps and soccer kicks – make them legal! The different locations, walkout animation, choice between ring and cage make the EA Sports MMA experience stand out as a game with a ton of repeat playability.
EA Sports MMA hits the shelves on October 19 and we definitely classify this game as a MUST BUY. It is sufficiently different than the UFC game, so it justifies owning both. We can only hope that with the release of this game, UFC Undisputed 2011 will be another great upgrade to the MMA video game experience. But hopefully the beef gets squashed eventually, because the ultimate combination would be a UFC + EA Sports love child.
