While watching Kostya Tszyu vs. Ricky Hatton to get pumped for Hatton-Malignaggi (preview here) on Saturday (November 22 @ 10 PM ET, HBO), what hit me was that Hatton could be a beast in MMA provided he gets trained enough in the other disciplines of the art. Because he has short arms (5-5 reach, 5-6 height), Hatton relies on putting immense pressure on his opponent, and clinch-fighting. While many boxers clinch because they don't have a choice, Ricky Hatton thrives in the clinch, and watching his fights, almost looks like he seeks trench warfare. Hatton not only mauls, but he is extremely effective at throwing punches to the body and head while he is pressing up against an opponent. Hatton is a master of dirty boxing. Dirty boxing is a popular and effective tactic applied by many fighters in MMA. Randy Couture has taken dirty boxing to an art form, and can be seen smashing opponents' heads in during his fights with this tactic during his fights. Dirty boxing is just one way of fighting in MMA. Mixed martial artists box, kickbox, wrestle and grapple. There are boxers whose fighting styles are more suited than others to make a transition to MMA. Who are they? Here are the Top 3.
