Zuffa LLC, the owner of MMA promotional companies UFC and Strikeforce, announced today that nearly early 350 of their fighters under contract will now have access to accident insurance to cover injuries that occur while training, as well as non-training accidents.
The new policy also adds medical life insurance and dental coverage for fighters. Additionally, Zuffa, LLC. has agreed to pay 100 percent of the premiums for fighters under contract.
As independent contractors, fighters were covered by event-related insurance for injuries suffered in bouts, but did not previously have coverage for injuries suffered while training for fights.
There has been talk of a fighter’s union since Zuffa purchased the Strikeforce brand just two months ago in March. Clearly, a move such as this will help relations between the powers that be and fighters.
