Richmond may not have been one of the best races of the year, but it certainly was one of the most intense. With half a dozen drivers scrabbling for four Chase spots, literally every single lap had meaning and import. And while Kyle Busch had to finish just four spots ahead of Brian Vickers to get into the Chase, he couldn't close the deal, and one of the year's winningest drivers ended up on the outside looking in. Brian Vickers is in the Chase, and you've got to figure he's going to be problematic for the big guns to deal with. Denny Hamlin enters with tremendous momentum -- think about it, he and his crew specifically targeted this race to win, and then went out and did it. That's pretty impressive, and something that ought to concern Stewart-Johnson-Gordon.Oh, and Kyle's not out of the picture yet, either; you really think he's comfortable sitting back and lett...

‘Story of the Year’ Designation Is Up For Grabs

Heading into the race weekend at Richmond, I asked my mom to say a little prayer for Brian Vickers; Mom has better connections in that area than I do. "Why?" she asked. "Is there something wrong with him?" I assured her that Vickers was doing just fine as far as I knew, but that I would really like for him to make the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup field...

POLICE CALLED TO SETTLE NASCAR DEBATE BETWEEN WISCONSIN MEN

Police were called to an Eau Claire, Wis., residence at 2:30 a.m. recently after neighbors reported a possible fight on the premises. When police arrived at the scene, they heard arguing, let themselves in (Fourth Amendment? What Fourth Amendment?) and discovered four men in a heated debate over NASCAR. The 20-something dudes admitted they had been drinking and were being loud, and...

Kenseth can't just blame Richmond for not making Chase

Denny Hamlin takes Richmond, but it's a trio doing the real racin' to the make the Chase. With a seventh-place finish, Brian Vickers is in, knocking Matt Kenseth out and keeping Kyle Busch out, too. Pete Pistone says the composite season, not just Richmond, does in Kenseth and Busch.

Let The Chase Begin!

The Chase is on! And, I am thirlled! Kyle Busch is out, as Brian Vickers bumped out the 4-time 09′ race winner with some amazing driving down the stretch. Jeff Gordon is positioned as a solid contender for his 5th crown. Therefore, the only thing that would have made the race at Richmond International Raceway any [...]

NUMBERS SAY CUP IS STEWART'S TO LOSE

With the Chase field locked, it is time to put away our Chase qualifying tables and break out our championship percentage probability tables. With 10 races to go, Tony Stewart leads all drivers with a 30 percent chance of winning the Cup. I kicked things off with a simulated model of 14,950 potential outcomes in the next 10 races. (Yes, this is what I do for fun.) Adjust for the...
