Dale Earnhardt Jr. won the season opening Daytona 500.
The NASCAR Sprint Cup Series returned to action a the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway on Sunday. Austin Dillon led a field of 43 cars to the green flag and led the first laps in the return of the No. 3 Chevrolet to the track.
Two cars found the wall early in Greg Biffle and Kyle Larson and Martin Truex Jr. lost a motor on lap 31.
The race would be red flagged for 6 hours 21 minutes and 40 seconds. After which Tony Stewart had car troubles and a crash took out several cars including Danica Patrick and Austin Dillon.
With less than ten laps to go Earnhardt Jr, Johnson and Gordon all found themselves at the front of the field when a caution came out with six laps to go for a crash at the back of the field. Under caution Earnhardt Jr. collected debris on his grill opening but it would not cause the car to overheat and a caution flag would come out as he came to the checkered flag.
