PLAYERS: Denny Hamlin
Suddenly and without warning, Denny Hamlin's No. 11 Toyota lost power late in the race, finally stopping on the frontstretch on Lap 391 of 500 and causing the eighth caution of the afternoon. The culprit was a broken bolt on the master switch -- a freakish failure that shut the car off. Hamlin lost 34 laps in the garage as his team repaired the problem. He finished 33rd and dropped to fifth in the standings, 49 points behind Johnson, and, in his mind, out of the running for the championship. "It's the little things that get us," Hamlin said. "I've been in these Chases for seven years, and I've had my fair share of electrical issues and motor issues and things like that. "All I can do is just drive my heart out, and it it's not meant to be, it's not meant to be. We'll have our time. It's just our time is not now."

Hamlin struggles at Martinsville

Denny Hamlin didn't receive the homecoming he had hoped for at Martinsville Speedway on Sunday. The Virginia native entered the weekend third in the NASCAR Sprint Cup standings, 20 points behind then-leader Brad Keselowski. However, although he fought back from several setbacks in the race, Hamlin couldn't overcome electrical issues. "It's going (expletive) haywire...

Denny Hamlin’s Chase Hopes Shockingly All But Dashed After Martinsville

Six-time Martinsville race winner, Jimmie Johnson is on the pole, his speed of 927.598 edged out Brian Vickers for the top spot, who is making his last start of 2012 season, in the #55 Toyota for Michael Waltrip Racing.  Johnson has finished in the top ten in 18...

Hamlin pushes past Crafton for win

Denny Hamlin showed just why he is a master of Martinsville Speedway Saturday. Making a rare appearance in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, Hamlin started from the rear after missing the drivers' meeting because of a conflict with Sprint Cup practice, then immediately began to work his way through traffic. He bumped and banged his way to the front, finally taking the lead...

Field of true Chase contenders slims

After this weekend's race at Martinsville Speedway and looking forward, I feel like we're down to three, maybe three-and-a-half men, who have a shot at the championship. Denny Hamlin and his group took such a hit after the mechanical failure at Martinsville that being able to recover from the amount of points they lost in Sunday's race is going to be next to impossible...

Gibbs needs to eliminate mistakes

When Joe Gibbs Racing looks back on the 2012 NASCAR Sprint Cup season its going to think it was a successful year because all three of its drivers won races. Denny Hamlin has five wins and made the Chase for the Sprint Cup and teammates Kyle Busch and Joey Logano each have one victory. But if the Gibbs teams ever really wants to contend for a championship, they've got to get...

Hamlin Races From Back Of The Field To Win Kroger 200 At Martinsville

Denny Hamlin took the long way to his second straight win in the Kroger 200 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Martinsville Speedway Saturday afternoon. Hamlin, who is in the thick of the NASCAR Sprint Cup championship battle, qualified fifth for the race, but had to go to the rear of the field for the start of the race, a penalty for missing the drivers meeting. Denny Hamlin wins trucks race at Martinsville Speedway with aggressive pass

To Denny Hamlin, it was standard operating procedure at Martinsville Speedway. To Matt Crafton, it was an unjustified bulldozer move. Regardless of the point of view, Hamlin won Saturday’s Kroger 200 with an aggressive pass after a restart with eight laps left and showed no regret in claiming his second victory at the 0.526-mile track and his second win in 15 career Camping World...

Denny Hamlin Kroger 200 Race Recap

If you had to pick any driver to come from the back of the field during a 200-lap race at Martinsville (Va.) Speedway, the discussion wouldn’t go much further than the name Denny Hamlin. After rain halted NASCAR Camping World Truck Series qualifying twice and the session ended just prior to the start of Sprint Cup Series practice, Hamlin – who is still in the heat of the Chase...

Hamlin rallies for Martinsville win, points battle takes a swing

There’s never a shortage of action whenever the trucks visit the half-mile Martinsville Speedway and that was no different on Saturday. After dominating the majority of the race, it looked as though Kevin Harvick was going to cruise to a sweep of the Martinsville races in 2012. But that changed on the restart with 41 laps to go after series points leader, Ty Dillon hit the turn...

Martinsville separates Chase field

Honestly, everything kind of unfolded Sunday afternoon to some degree the way it was anticipated at Martinsville Speedway. We talked about it a lot pre-Martinsville. We knew we would have a fair amount of cautions in the NASCAR Sprint Cup race; we had 11 cautions for 64 laps. At the same time, we cycled through one set of green-flag pit stops, so all that was pretty much in line...
