Crew chief Kevin “Bono” Manion had a brand new chassis built for Martinsville. Following a 24th-place qualifying effort, the team still felt that they would be very competitive in race conditions on Sunday from what they saw in the two final practice sessions Saturday afternoon. The new chassis would show strength from the drop of the green flag as McMurray was able move toward the front of the field, advancing as high as fifth-position before the halfway mark of the 500-lap race. After getting off pit sequence with the leaders in the middle stages of the race, the McDonald’s team would overcome a one-lap deficit and battle back to a 17th-place finish.
