What do you get when you pair a young unproven race car driver with a brand new up-start race team? Failure? Usually, yes but Landon Cassill and BK Racing seem to be the exception to the rule.
The team has been fighting against the odds all season long, and they’re starting to make some real headway. Cassill recently made some headlines for his feud with Danica Patrick, but in all honesty he should be making headlines for the incredible job he’s doing bringing his lower-tier equipment home inside the top-20.
Sunday at Martinsville, Cassill finished a solid 19th. The week before in Kansas, he was spun out by Danica Patrick and still came home 18th. In all Cassill has tallied a grand total of seven top-20 finishes in 2012. Not bad for a driver and team who didn’t even have a race shop or race cars just a couple of weeks before the season started. Also not bad for a driver who was essentially dropped from the Hendrick development driver program due to torn up equipment and sponsorship woes.
Cassill is now driving like a seasoned verteran and has been running at the finish of 29 of the 33 races this season.
Part of the credit must be given to veteran crew chief Doug Richert.
Richert of course was the crew chief on Dale Earnhardt’s first championship team back in 1980, but through the years he has built quite the resume. In addition to working with Earnhardt he has turned the wrenches for Neil Bonnett, Buddy Baker and he even put together a six-win season with Greg Biffle back in 2005. That effort was good enough for second in the point standings.
If BK Racing sticks with Cassill and Richert they could be on the fast track to building a formidable race team in the not-so-distant future.
