The Richard Childress Racing team started the night from the fifth position and jumped to the lead on lap seven. Dillon led for the next 56 circuits around the 2.5-mile superspeedway. Crew chief Marcus Richmond utilized routine two-tire pit stops to maintain track position, until the final pit stop of the night on lap 64 when the Welcome, N.C.-based team took fuel only. With multiple other teams opting to stay on the racing surface, Dillon lined up in the seventh position for the ensuing restart.
