Most of us aren’t going to make it to see our 104th birthday. If any of us do, it’s highly unlikely that we will be heading to the stadium or arena to watch our favorite team play. That’s what separates people like Theresa Sanchez from the rest of the world. According to Spurs Nation, the 104-year-old Sanchez attended her first Spurs game on Monday night. She has been a fan of the team since the 1970s.
A season ticket holder who volunteers at HCR Manor Care gave Sanchez and four other residents tickets to the game against the Blazers, which San Antonio fortunately won by a comfortable margin.
“I was so surprised when they told me I was coming,” Sanchez said. “I never thought I would come to a game, and this year, they’re pretty good. It’s so beautiful. I’m so lucky, and I’m really happy.”
Sanchez says she would watch the Spurs when they first came to town (as the Dallas Chaparrals) in 1973 so she would be prepared to recap the games with her son when he came to visit. She has since watched every game, and family members say she even used to request dinner in front of the TV when the game was on. When her eyesight started deteriorating, Sanchez’s granddaughter bought her a big-screen to make sure she could see the TV clearly.
As a 100th birthday present, Manu Ginobli gave Sanchez a pair of autographed sneakers. She proudly wore them to the game on Monday night to watch her team clinch the top spot in the Western Conference playoffs.
The fact that Sanchez is not the first fan who is over 100 years old to take in a professional basketball game this year is one of the most remarkable things I’ve ever heard.
