The Miami Heat are now officially the gold standard of the NBA, like it or not. With the basketball season complete, the draft talk will begin to “heat” up, along with the trade rumors. The Philadelphia 76ers, who had a great and unexpected run in the playoffs will face plenty of decisions in regards to the draft and possible trades.

Lou Williams, who has already opted out of the final year of his contract with the 76ers will be the first decision that needs to be made. Interest in Williams from around the league is reportedly high and could garner Williams somewhere in the neighborhood of $8 million per year. This makes the 76ers’ decision an easy one — Goodbye, Lou! In no way can the Sixers spend $8 million for a role player who at the top of his game now. Williams is a great complement to the team and he would continue to be in that role if he were to stay with Sixers.

The Draft – Here’s a great trivia question: How many impact players have the Sixers drafter throughout their history of picking ten or higher? The answer: ZERO. In fact, the 76ers since 1980 have drafted only two legitimate stars into the NBA – Charles Barkley and Allen Iverson. With a track record like that, the fear is that this year’s Sixers’ pick will be worthless to the future of the team. Trading up is not and option because the Sixers don’t have a player that could fetch them a pick higher than #10 in the draft. The best course for the Sixers at # 15 is to trade the pick and get a role player and another pick for this year or next year.

Another question that is routinely dealt with in the Sixers’ offseasons is what to do with Andre Iguodala? Keep him! Who is a better defender around the league than Iggy? While the “other AI” is not the player we all wanted or expected when the Sixers drafted him, he is still a legit third option and the guy can flat out defend. We will need him when we do get that high impact player that the team has coveted for so long.

The Sixers are not on the same level as Miami, and won’t be by making a couple of moves or drafting at #15. Those are just the facts. The Sixers need to approach this situation with long term vision, something this organization has lacked over the year, as evidenced by their record. Becoming an elite team in the NBA is not something that will happen overnight, but with the right moves and right approach, it can happen. I, for one, can wait another year if it means getting a REAL STAR!Similar Posts:
