I mentioned Ginobili quite prominently in this post and said that in this game he gave Duncan what Pippen used to give MJ and what Kobe needs so desperately now: someone who can carry the load while the superstar rests for a few minutes so that he will be fresh in the fourth quarter. Nash was right on top of Bowen before he caught the flying knee. Using your leg to back up a defender and clear space is a normal move, although the placement of the knee was most unfortunate for Nash.

20 Second Timeout:
The story of the San Antonio-Phoenix series will ultimately boil down to two things: (1) the Spurs have the best player on either team, Tim Duncan; (2) the Spurs can win at the Suns' preferred uptempo pace but the Suns cannot win at a slowdown game. Duncan had 33 points, 19 rebounds and three blocked shots as the Spurs defeated the Suns, 108-101, to take a 2-1 lead. Those kind of numbers are nothing new for Duncan in the playoffs; in fact, Duncan moved into fifth place on the career postseason list for 30 point, 15 rebound games: this was his 15th, one more than Hakeem Olajuwon had; the only players who had more such games are Wilt Chamberlain (39), Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (33), Elgin Baylor (31), Bob Pettit (24) and Shaquille O'Neal (22).

I agree that Duncan shined in the 4th, but let's not forget the efforts of Ginobili in the third. I dont think Duncan could have closed out the game without Ginobili's efforts to rally his team in the third with Duncan resting up. Another thing was that Nash was scoreless until 5 minutes left in the third which is not how the suns are going to win this series. I will admit to one thing, with the recent light of omari stoudamire on Bruce Bowen's dirty play, this game highlighted Bowen's dirty tactics. Bruce drove a knee into Nash's groin when he didn't need to, Nash wasn't aggressive on D, and Bowen threw a blatant knee right into him. What was more astonishing was the officiating in this game, I counted several fouls which weren't called, and without a doubt Bowen should have been punished for that knee. I'm neither a Suns or Spurs fan but the officiating seemed pro-San Antonio last night.

The Original Top 50 NBA Players of All-time
To celebrate its 50th anniversary, the NBA polled a bunch of people to determine who the 50 best players of all-time were, without regard to rank. See how many of the players you can name in 5 minutes.
Hint: This list is obsolete in some sense because it does not include Tim Duncan, Kobe Bryant, Allen Iverson, Kevin Garnett, and a few other current players who probably belong on it.
Shaq: I Need One More Ring to Complete My Legacy
I recently suggested that Shaquille O'Neal may have to share equal billing with Tim Duncan when history evaluates who was the dominant player of the post-Michael Jordan era. O'Neal believes that he needs to win at least one more championship to cement his "legacy."
Encourage your teammates to adopt presuure defense
If you are watching NCAA teams, University of Texas, Purdue, or Michigan State, you can notice that they're all load defensive stances: with the knee bent, defenders don't turn their backs to the ball and cutters are bumped and forced out of their way.The superstars like Garnett, Tim Duncan and ...
What the Black Sheep Knows
"What the Black Sheep Knows" is a sculpture that I saw in Cleveland while I was there to cover the NBA Finals. At its base is a caption written by the artist, Markus Pierson, that contains a significant message about being persistent in the face of adversity. Tim Duncan, LeBron James and Bruce Bowen are three Finals' participants who overcame a lot to reach the sport...
Do the Spurs qualify as a dynasty?
Granted, they're not as important as the Lincoln-Douglas debates, but as long as there have been barstools, there have been men sitting on those stools arguing about sports. This week, John Paulsen and Anthony Stalter sit at a virtual bar and debate whether or not the San Antonio Spurs qualify as a dynasty. Take a seat, order a beverage and feel free to give us your two cents...
The Rise of the New Era or The Fall of a Degeneration?
For over 15 years, the 'big man' has dominated the NBA Championships and is regarded to as the one and only catalyst that any elite team lacks for that final push in the NBA Finals. For the past 15 years, four dominant big men from four different teams have led their team to the NBA's most coveted prize, namely: Shaquille O'Neal, Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Hakeem...
Sam Jones: The Smoothest Celtic
A slightly different version of this article was originally published in the December 2004 issue of Basketball Digest.Bobby "Slick" Leonard has seen five decades of pro basketball as a player, coach and broadcaster, so it carries some weight when he declares that Sam Jones is the most underrated guard in NBA history. It is easy to overlook Jones: Oscar Robertson and Jerry...
Game Of The Night: Cavaliers v. Spurs

Shaq, Redd Speak About Kobe in Sports Illustrated
A pair of unrelated articles in the November 10 issue of Sports Illustrated contain some interesting quotes about Kobe Bryant. In Dan Patrick's "Just My Type," the former SportsCenter anchor interviewed Shaquille O'Neal. Here are a few of those questions and answers:Patrick: "O.K., if you're going to teach your kids how to play in the pivot, do you have...

With Jeff Foster out, you need to look elsewhere for help.

Watch Out for the Denver Nuggets...as They Slide Down in the Standings
All we've been hearing about since the Allen Iverson-Chauncey Billups trade is how Iverson is destroying the Detroit Pistons while Billups is revitalizing the Denver Nuggets. Meanwhile, I've kept saying two things:1) Besides the well known salary cap relief that the Pistons can obtain by not re-signing Iverson, Iverson can have an impact this season by potentially making...
