Off two feet, between the legs, finish with a left-handed dunk. That's what Desmond Mason did at a recent Kings practice during the layup drill. Teammates were told to mimic Mason or run. So Mason pulled a move from his collection of highlight dunks from his days competing in NBA Slam Dunk contests earlier this decade. "It was like 10:15 in the morning," said Kings guard Kevin Martin. "And we had to follow after what he did. And he went in between his legs like he did when he won the dunk contest. Couldn't no one else follow him up, so we all had to run." So much for Mason not being able to get off the floor the way he did when he was younger. "I can definitely still dunk on somebody anytime I want," Mason said with a grin. When Mason signed a non-guaranteed, one-year contract worth $1.18 million last month, the obvious question was whether he still had the athletic ability that made him one of the NBA's most exciting players.
