Kurt Thomas Traded to Seattle

The Phoenix Suns sent F/C Kurt Thomas to Seattle on Friday. Thomas and the Suns 1st round draft picks in 2008 and 2010 were traded to Seattle for a future 2nd round pick, and an 8 million dollar trade exemption.

Phoenix will probably not use that trade exemption, however. They have been trying to get under the luxury tax threshold for weeks now, and their payroll was one of the main holdups in trying to acquire Kevin Garnett from the Minnesota Timberwolves. After this trade, they will most likely stand pat on their roster.

The trade will bring Phoenix's payroll down from 76 million dollars down to 68 million.

Seattle improves their frontcourt depth while gaining a valuable trading chip at this years trading deadline. Thomas's contract only has 1 year/8 million dollars remaining. They could try to move his contract to bring in a veteran if Kevin Durant and Jeff Green are enough to get them in the mix of things as far as a playoff spot is concerned. Picking up two first round draft picks can only be viewed as positives for the franchise as well.

Kurt Thomas is trash anyway so it don't matter.

And a 1st round draft pick?

Well, Seattle was under the cap anyway so the only incentive that they had to take Kurt Thomas from the Suns was to acquire the two first round draft picks.

Since there are so few teams under the salary cap (so few that only the Bobcats come to mind), Phoenix had to sweeten up the deal for a team to take Thomas and his contract. Figure also that if Phoenix kept KT this season, they would of had to pay 16 million due to the value of his contract; 8 million to Thomas and 8 million to the NBA due to Phoenix being over the luxury tax threshold.

So, considering those circumstances, it doesn't surprise me that Phoenix offered those two first rounders.

Not a bad deal for the Sonics. He plays solid defense, and will do better not playing the run and gun style that Phoenix played. However, he will never get a ring with them.

Phoenix is shooting themselves in the foot with all these cost saving moves. I know it's really easy for me to say they should the owners shouldn't worry too much about the luxury tax and just go for the ring, but he should. This team has been 7 strong, and they get worn down in the playoffs. Thomas didn't guard Duncan as well as people said, but he sure as hell guarded him better than STAT.

And another thing, why do they keep dropping their draft picks? The could have a Luol Deng, Sergio Rodriguez, Nate Robinson coming off the bench if they would have been willing to pay for the rookie contracts. Ah well, I'm a Lakers fan anyway, so this is actually good news for me.

seattle scores big in this one

This has proved to be the undoing of the Suns. If the Suns had kept Thomas, and had Marion to play defense, and House off the bench, they would have won a championship. Now they are already washed up. They gave Thomas and 2 1st rounders away for 8 million and a 2nd rounder, then they spend 40 million on an old Shaq. Whoever did that trade should be fired.
