Fourteen years ago, then-Rockets (and future Lakers) head coach Rudy Tomjanovic reminded us to never underestimate the heart of a champion. Well, the 2009 Lakers won't be champions because they lack the heart. For about a week, I've heard all the crap about the Lakers not having that killer instinct to win the title. How they couldn't stomp out a team when they were down. I would then point back to the 2000 Lakers. They were trying to get their first championship and they had the ...

Hate to say it, but this is why Kobe will never be as good as Jordan.

The Jordan book is closed - Kobe doesn't even make the 1st page - we're over that now. The issue is whether Kobe can be considered in the all time great category at all. He is a surefire Hall of Famer but we all know that there is a definitive hierarchy within that Hall of Fame group. He will never be in the 1st tier with MJ, Bird, Magic, etc. He was making a case for that second tier but unless he wins one on his own (with the likes of guys like Isiah, Hakeem, and maybe even Shaq - Garnett is probably edged this category). Should he not accomplish this, he is on the lower deck with guys like Domonique Wilkins, Clyde Drexler, etc - not shabby, but I think this correctly categorizes where Kobe belongs in NBA history.

Agree totally. Kobe's legacy is going to be linked to Shaq unless he can get over the top on his own. Kobe doesn't win all those titles without the Diesel alongside him. Jordan was the unquestioned alpha dog on those Bulls squads, whereas Kobe wasn't even the most instrumental part of their championship teams. I'm expecting them to get by an undermanned but fiesty Rockets squad, but wouldn't surprise me in the least to see Denver pull an upset. They're looking tough.

To be fair, I give Kobe complete credit as a crucial element for the 3rd title, but I find him mostly replaceable for the 1st 2, where they were won purely due to Shaq's dominance.

Come on guys, I'm not a Laker fan but Kobe is one of the greatest basketball players to play the game. The problem with the Lakers is they are a bunch of "Prima Donna's". They play hard only when they need to. If they get by Houston, they should but they might not, they will never go any further because all the remaining teams are playing with an intensity level way above the Lakers.

They better play hard all of the time against LeBron and the Cavs or it will be a sweep. That's if they get by Houston.

It does'nt matter, I changed my stance on who I feel will win it all, and I think it will be the Cavs and Lebron James.

I forgot that the Lakers will still have to get by the Nuggets. They way the Nuggets are playing right now and with the leadership of Chauncy Billups, the Lakers may not make the finals.

You're so right. Houston is the easiest team and the Lakers are having problems. They don't match up well against teams with good penetrating guards.

I think the Nuggets got it all day, providing LA gets past Houston.

Sounds to me like somebody has already handed the Cavs the championship.

Damn Skippy!...with no injuries, and all that talent...chumps...Cleveland, as I know My Celtics might not even get by the Magic, and no way by Cleveland(kinda due to a major injury!)...will absolutely feast on That F****** Kobe, and those two Euro-Queers...SOFT F'ing Team...Bynum? sigh, gimme a break
  • All you Laker and Kobe Hater's.....shhhh. Shaq couldn't do it in Orlando by himself. Jordan couldn't do it by himself until Pippen and Kerr. Kobe or Lebron can't do it by themselves without a consistent effort from a #2 and 3 guy! How do you make it to the playoffs consistently and the Westtern Conf. finals and not have a Heart of a Champion or Mental Toughness. Please!!!!!!!!!!! I'm so sick of these terms being thrown around, no one says it about the Yankees, Cowboys, or any other winning dynasty who falls short of their goal.
