Tonight in Orlando, the Lakers continued their playoff-long pattern of answering a loss with a win, but it really felt much more like a gift from the home team, and especially, their coach. This one will be the game that Magic Fan remembers with bitter satisfaction when Stan Van Gundy is canned in 18 to 24 months. In the first half, Dwight Howard had as many rebounds (14) as the entire Lakers team combined. As you might have gathered from that little tidbit, the Laker bigs didn't exactly bring their "A" game early, and if it weren't for a few extra Magic turnovers, it would have been a lot uglier than Magic 49, Lakers 37.In the third, Trevor Ariza went crazy Broadway style, and the Magic tightened up badly as the Magic tossed aside the lead in less than half of the quarter. The pace picked up along with the nastiness, as Howard and Bryant got tangled up and threw bitchy elbows at each other, causing Mark Jackson and Jeff Van Gundy to get physical basketball wood. Ho...

On the Notion that Dwight Howard Has No Post Game

On Tuesday evening, I settled into my media row seat next to David Thorpe for Game 3 of the NBA Finals. I always like to pick Thorpe's brain, so I asked him a question along the lines of "if you start your career looking like Dwight Howard, can you evolve to be a really efficient post scorer?" It was like Thorpe had been waiting for me. Immediatley he hit me with a...

Dwight Howard Windup Half Court Shot, Game 4 NBA Finals, Video

Dwight Howard Windup Half Court Shot, Game 4 NBA Finals, Video. Another trick shot for all of you people that love trick shots. The leg kick was a nice touch. I think he should be working on his post game, but that’s just me.

Dwight’s chips are on the table; meet the LeBron of the NHL

His team’s back is against the ropes and their legs are wobbly, so Dwight Howard pulled the only card he had left in the motivational playbook: He made a guarantee. Sort of. “You want me to get up here and say the season is going to be over tomorrow? That’s not what anybody should do [...]

Kobe Bryant-Dwight Howard disagreement stays civil

The former Olympic teammates have a heated, but brief, discussion in Game 4, but Bryant says it was not R-rated. Kobe Bryant and Dwight Howard, Olympic teammates turned combatants, looked as if they were prepping for some mixed martial arts action in the second half of Thursday...

What the Magic Have Learned

In talking to Magic big man Adonal Foyle, I have learned way more than we can fit into his video playoff journal. For instance, yesterday when he told me that Dwight Howard has an above average post-game, I talked to him just after the Magic had come out of a film study session, and he shared various insights about what the Magic have learned. Foyle said the emphasis of the film...

LA's Offense Too Big for the Magic's Defense?

The Lakers offense have been punishing Orlando for the last three games. All I can say is that the Orlando's defense is struggling, badly. The Magic played great in Game Three of the NBA Playoffs.Dwight Howard was hitting way more free throws tan Kobe Bryant imagined. Then there was the record-setting 62.5 percent shooting.Mikael Pietrus was owning the Lakers D, while Rashard...

Next Stop: Momentumland

by Tom ZillerFiled under: Lakers, Magic, PlayoffsAs careful Finals viewers know, it's not all lollipops and unicorns at the NBA's pinnacle. For every Derek Fisher there's a Rashard Lewis. For every Dwight Howard, an Andrew Bynum.Momentum is a cruel mistress, and boy does she get around. She's in your room sipping Moet one minute, knocking on Trevor Ariza's door...

My Two Cents: NBA Finals Game Last Night

I could care less about either team in the NBA Finals but watching Dwight Howard and Michael Pietrus basically blow the game and an NBA championship got me thinking. Did Howard “choke” missing those two free throws? Did Pietrus “choke” missing the game winning shot? I say no. What won out last night was experience over inexperience. Derek Fisher, a veteran of the playoffs...
