Minnesotans Are Still In Love With KG

How many times have you heard a crowd "boo" a former player who returns to his old court for the first time after a trade? I guarantee you this: you will NEVER hear that sound when Kevin Garnett steps onto the floor of the Target Center in Minneapolis.

KG was the heart and soul of the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Target Center is the 'House That KG Built.' Kevin has made only one appearance at the Target Center since his trade to the Boston Celtics. Unfortunately, he did not play due to an injury. He did, however, take the floor to greet the fans. And the fans greeted him in return with an outpouring of appreciation and support, bringing tears to the eyes of the future Hall of Famer.

Now, Kevin Garnett is a champion. During his post game interview with Michele Tafoya, KG gave a shout out to his people in "Sota." I am one of those people and , believe me, there are legions of us. In the month since game 6 of the Finals I've heard people in Minnesota and Wisconsin (yes, Cheeseheads are KG fans, too) comment on KG almost daily. If I happen to be wearing a piece of Celtic clothing, it's a given that I'll be approached by a fan to talk about the Finals. In every single instance the conversation has turned into a KG Love Fest.

Timberwolves fans were heartbroken to see him go, but we also knew that there was no chance of Kevin ever achieving his goal if he stayed in Minnesota. So, we said, "goodbye" with a lump in our collective throats and immediately ordered the NBA League Pass so we could watch our kid play in Boston. With blurry eyes and heavy hearts, we endured the "I Remember" commercial over & over again, but were glad the fans in Boston were embracing our guy.

The Boston community has much more than just a remarkable athlete in their midst; they also have a true humanitarian. KG is devoted to 'giving back' and although he doesn't like his volunteer work & charitable contributions publicized in the media, I can tell you, from personal experience, that he left Minneapolis a better place than he found it. But his activism has always extended far beyond the borders of Minnesota. He is part of Oprah's 'Angel Network' and has donated money to build homes for many Katrina victims. I'm sure the City of Boston is now reaping the benefits of his kindness and generosity as well.

Minnesota loves Kevin Garnett. Like proud parents, we were sad to see him leave home, but we delight in his every achievement and are thrilled that he has found success in Boston.

And next season, when KG steps onto the Target Center Court for the first time in his Celtic jersey, this Minnesotan (among many) will be there, wearing Celtic Green #5, cheering him on.

without a doubt hes a Timberwolve for life. I dont see as a Celtic only as "the big bad wolf" - Kevin Garnett.

Kevin always said he was 'a Timberwolf for life'. And even though he's in Boston physically, I know a huge piece of his heart remains here in Minneapolis. He will always be our Big Bad Wolf.
Gawd, IT STILL HURTS! :(

Yeah if Mchale did his job Kevin would've been there his whole career. He might return soon though. :o)

McHale should consider finding a more suitable job, perhaps in the food service industry.

"YOU WANT FRIES WITH THAT?"

good post dude...as usual...still in Posey mourning, know U love it...haha, lol...how would you run top 4 as of now?...1. LA 2. SA 3. NO 4. BOS/DET(depending on a C's 07' blockbuster for Pistons I'm thinking

sigh, "depending on a C's 07' blockbuster type of trade for 08' Pistons I meant to say"

Great article. KG is a Wolf for life for sure. I hope he plays his final season with the Wolves along with Big Al and the others. That'd be a great way to end his HOF career.

KG, Big AL and Kevin Love...thats the triple towers!

I would give my first born to see Kevin come home...if I had a kid, that is...

i can help ;)

I appreciate the offer :)

The big thing that I personally love about KG is the fact that he paid his dues with the T-wolves and didn't complain. He showed up every night and gave his 110% and never once complained about the talent level or anything else. He's a class act that doesn't deserve to get booed anywhere.

Amen, brother!

One of my favorite KG moments to date was then he gave due to the Minnesota fans for sticking with him after he won the title. It was nice to see he didn't forget us just because he moved to Boston.

That was one of my favorite KG moments as well. He knows we love him & he knows we are behind him all the way. I'm glad he knows he always has a home here in MN.

The KG Love Fest continues...deservedly so. What's not to love? I may be biased, but to me, KG is the greatest all-around basketball player on the planet. I hope Kobe took notes during the Finals. He could learn a lot about leadership & teamwork from Kevin.

You hit the nail on the head. Kobe is great, arguably the best basketball player on the planet or even in history but he does lack the leadership and teamwork that KG has.

When it comes to Kobe, he's the best at what he does; an incredible scoring machine! But in my book, he's a one trick pony, it's all about the offense and individual stats. In the 12+ years I've watched KG, I've seen him play every position on the floor (look at the size of that point guard!) and I've seen him take the clipboard out of Flip's & Wittman's hands and run the team as well. KG is the ultimate all-around package.

dude has been my favorite player since he was balling with ronnie fields in farragut

One of my prized possessions is an autographed photo of KG in his Farragut Academy uniform.

If KG had retired w/o winning a championship (ala Karl Malone) the world would be even MORE wrong that it actually is.

For 48+ minutes on June 17th 2008, all was right with the world. And watching him with Michele Tafoya during his post game was overwhelming. Yep, I cried like a little girl.

It is such a rare combination to find someone so passionate on the floor and so classy off the floor.
Great write up!

He is rare, indeed! I grew up a huge MLB fan but was a bit was disgusted with the 1994 strike. Not long after that, the T-Wolves drafted Kevin. I've been hooked on the kid since his first game against the Kings at Arco Arena . KG single handedly turned me into an NBA fan. (thanks again, Kevin ;)

good points all, tough when you lose the heart and soul to your team, especially via trade...KG also loves Boston as he has stated, but yeah, he played many seasons in MINN...a Wolf he should retire as...yes, McHale is not getting it done...last on this good thread, Wolves will get him back while Celtics get Al back...monster season for AJ, and damn young...just know you have a HOF possibly right in Minneapolis, a fun city man, there is a lot to do there

Yes, it is tough. But we were lucky to have had him as long as we did. I started hoping for a KG trade back in '05 because it was painfully obvious he was miserable.

Did anybody see the Robert Smigel animated film on Saturday Night Live that mentioned the KG trade? It was priceless!

I am a Boston fan, and love what KG has done for the team. I completely understand your pain in Minnesota and it would have been similar if we had to watch Paul Pierce leave Boston and win a championship with another team. Great article, brought tears to my eyes just remembering all the emotions from the past season.

Thanks for your comment. I really appreciate the fact that Bostonians have empathy for Minnesotans.

The 2007-08 season was incredible! KG was so miserable his last 2 seasons in MN; it was worth losing him to see him happy & winning. He's a great guy, one in a million. Take good care of him in Boston...or else! ;)

Yes....as much as it still hurts that the Lakers didn't win; I'm happy that Kevin won his first
championship....he deserved it !

Thanks for your comment Jcutie. I know how hard it is for you as a Laker fan, as evidenced by the many arguments you & I had during the Finals! I look forward to arguing with you next season (this time with no malice :) It's coming soon!
