Wow, what a difference a year makes. Just last spring, I was writing about how non-existent the Denver defense was. With Allen Iverson now traded to the Pistons, and Chauncey Billups in Denver, it's starting to look like the Nuggets got the best out of that trade. But more importantly, the Nuggets are playing the kind of defense that can take them places deep into the playoffs.
I was really amazed watching the Nuggets against the Rockets last night. Admittedly, I haven't watched many games since the Billups trade, but Coach George Karl has them playing some great team M2M defense. They're taking charges, getting back on transition, stopping the ball, and playing great help-side defense. Take a look at a few sequences I took from the second half:
Force Baseline and Trap:
Among the great team defensive improvements the Nuggets have made, stopping the ball in the half-court is maybe their greatest. If you can't stop the ball, you don't have much of a chance at winning. In my opinion, you must stop the ball first, then the other things like taking charges, weak-side blocks, will come later.
Just great M2M defense here. In the setup, X4 and X5 form the defensive 'I'. X5 is there to protect the basket in a ball-you-man position. X4 is covering his man and also the high-post. Really, the only place O2 can go is drive baseline,

Once O2 takes the bait and drives baseline, X4 (who has switched) and X5 trap on the baseline. X3 has shifted down to take away the first pass to O5. X2 switches to cover O4 up top. And X1 is splitting O3 and O1. O2 tries to make the skip pass over the 2 tall defenders but ends up throwing it away,

Summary:
I was actually amazed as well how much the Nuggets have changed offensively. I'll have to save that for another post, but gone is the dribble drive offense, and the Nuggets have gone strictly PNR, and post-isos with Carmelo and Billups. With the way the Nuggets are playing defensively, I don't think it matters what offense they play with, they will be competitive in every game.

Chauncey Billups To the Sixers? It Makes Sense And It Could Work
Joe Dumars: "Everybody's in play. There are no sacred cows here."
If Dumar's statement is true, here is an idea...how about bringing Chauncey Billups to Philadelphia?
After the Elton Brand signing the Sixers next need is a a shooter. The Sixers finished last season 30th in the NBA in three point shooting.
How is Billups to the Sixers possible? Simple...
Pistons Put Upstart Celtics in Their Place
Filed under: Celtics, Pistons, Eastern, NBA Videos, NBA Last Night, Boston, DetroitWhat you see above is Chauncey Billups simply killing the Celtics in the fourth quarter. He scored a dozen of his 28 points in the fourth, including two free throws with 0.1 seconds left to seal the deal and give Detro...
Luol Deng Key Defensive Play for Bulls First Win
I have no doubt that if Chauncey Billups takes the open 3-pointer at the top of the key, the Pistons tie the game and possibly win in OT, they owe Luol Deng on this play.
Chauncey Billups: A Conflict of Interests
Everybody and anybody keeping track of the free agency pool this year has got to be already heads up with Chauncey Billups resigning with the Detroit Pistons. Now, it seems that Chauncey Billups will indeed be the face of the Pistons franchise of 2000; will he be one of the most beloved players the franchise has ever had, enough to have his jersey recognized and lifted up into the...
Chris Paul Stands Tall
There's been recent debate in the NBA as to who is the best point guard. Analysts will place the names Chauncey Billups, Tony Parker, Derron Williams, Jason Kidd and Chris Paul onto their lists. Usually it's a contention as to who is the #1 choice between Billups and Parker, but some argue that Chr...
Celts win 19th straight. last team to beat them? next team to beat them?
We all know the Celtics just cruised to their 19th straight win with an easy one over the sixers. And were so lost in the streak that we forgot who beat them last. Truth is, it was the Denver Nuggets. Will the Celtics stay unbeatable until the next Celtics/Nuggets matchup when Boston travels to Denver February 23? or will some team step up before that. Also, how far will the Nuggets...
The Advantage of Sam I Am
We have all thought about the obvious advantages of having Sam Cassell here for the stretch run. We would have a big veteran PG to deal with Chauncey Billups. We would have a true PG to handle the point guard duties when Rondo isn't on the floor. But, there is another advantage to having Sam here and that is mentoring the Rondo and Pruitt, the point guards of the future. Take...
Sixers come from behind to shock Pistons
The never-say-die Sixers, who have routinely made double digit comebacks this season, pulled off the biggest upset so far of the NBA Playoffs, knocking off the Detroit Pistons 90-86 despite trailing by 15 points as late as the halfway point of the third quarter.
Most experts didn't give the Sixers a chance in this series, and through the first two and a half quarters of the...
How about a All Star Celebrity Tour de USA???

Once when I was a youngster I arranged a Tour de Wenonah(my old home town in NJ), with some of my friends. I even created a yellow jersey from an old polo shirt my Dad had in his closet and drew logos on it in black magic marker, but now its fianally dawned on me. Lets have an All Star Celebrity Tour de USA.

Celts crush Nuggets, 114-76
To say this team has stepped up since losing KG last Friday would be a severe understatement. Coming of a 20-point win Sunday afternoon in Phoenix, the C's showed no signs of slowing down tonight, humiliating the Nuggets in Denver, 114-76. Ray Allen led the C's with 26 points. Pierce added 22, and Leon Powe 16, as the Celts handed Denver it's worse loss at home in 11...
Random Thoughts 5/12
I am at a complete loss as to how a team can be so dominant on defense during the regular season both at home and on the road and can be totally dominant on defense at home in the playoffs and then go on the road and completely forget how to play defense. It just doesn't make sense. Bucks Diary has a theory as to what is happening and they may have a point.
During the...

This is my first list of 5. I will be ranking the top 10 players at each position. Western Conference, Eastern Conference, doesn't matter, one list, ten guys, lets do work:

Game 4 - Nuggets @ Warriors
(Boulder-CO) The Denver Nuggets travel west tonight to take on the Golden State Warriors in a game that I have to admit does have me feeling a bit uneasy. The Nuggets traded Allen Iverson for Chauncey Billups on Monday, but Chauncey will not be available for Denver's first game since the ...
