The New York Knicks hired 1999 NBA Executive of the Year, Peter Gabriel as their new director of pro scouting and free agency. Gabriel was the General Manager for the Orlando Magic from 1996 to 2004. He was responsible for hiring Doc Rivers who won Coach of the Year honors. Gabriel also selected 2000 Rookie of the Year, Mike Miller 5th overall in the draft that year Gabriel had an active off-season in 2000 by acquiring Tracy McGrady in a sign and trade with the Toronto Raptors. T-Mac averaged 26.8 points per game in his first full season with the Magic. Gabriel also traded Chucky Atkins and Ben Wallace for Grant Hill along with nearly obtaining Tim Duncan. Gabriel offered him a six year, $67.5 million dollar deal which Duncan considered before re-signing with the San Antonio Spurs Gabriel was let go during the 2003-2004 campaign in which the team was in the middle of a franchise record-19 game losing steak. The Magic finished with 21 wins that season which was their lowest total since the 1991-1992 season. Gabriel was currently working for the Portland Trailblazers as an administrator and scout. The Blazers have a young and talented roster full of team chemistry. Gabriel will bring his experience and knowledge from Portland to a Knicks team that needs to find an identity. The position was newly created by Team President, Donnie Walsh who has revamped the Knicks front office during the off-season. Walsh and Gabriel share the same agent in Steve Kaufman. It was rumored that Gabriel would replace Glen Grunwald as general manager. Grunwald is the lone person leftover from Isiah Thomas's dismal regime. Walsh has done a good job at eliminating any trace of the former coach's administration. Ironically head coach Mike D'Antoni worked as a scout for Gabriel when they were both with the Philadelphia 76ers. The main duties of Gabriel will be evaluating future trades and free agent signings. The team is serious about getting under the salary cap in two seasons to make to make a run at the loaded superstar crop of free agents in 2010 Walsh also hired Misho Ostarcevic, who will be the director of player personnel. Ostarcevic served under Walsh in Indiana as an international scout. He is replacing Brandon Suhr, who was Thomas's director of player personnel.

Duncan Dominates, Nash--Not So Much

The story of the San Antonio-Phoenix series will ultimately boil down to two things: (1) the Spurs have the best player on either team, Tim Duncan; (2) the Spurs can win at the Suns' preferred uptempo pace but the Suns cannot win at a slowdown game. Duncan had 33 points, 19 rebounds and three blocked shots as the Spurs defeated the Suns, 108-101, to take a 2-1 lead. Those kind...

Kidd has a chance to make history

His 10th triple-double three months into the young NBA season (His career high is 12 which he accomplished last season). With 13 points, 11 rebounds and 12 assists in a losing effort against the Charlotte Bobcats, Kidd posted his third consecutive triple-double and became the first player since Grant Hill turned the trick in 1996-97 season. Wow. Now, after registering his...

Shaq: I Need One More Ring to Complete My Legacy

I recently suggested that Shaquille O'Neal may have to share equal billing with Tim Duncan when history evaluates who was the dominant player of the post-Michael Jordan era. O'Neal believes that he needs to win at least one more championship to cement his "legacy."

Complexities of the Jason Kidd Trade

Jason Kidd, a living triple-double machine. 99 career triple-doubles, to be exact, or somewhere in that ballpark. Co-Rookie of the Year back in 1995 with Grant Hill. Multiple All-Star appearances and starter for this year's squad. Fantastic NBA player, wonderful college player for 2 years with Cal wi...

Do the Spurs qualify as a dynasty?

Granted, they're not as important as the Lincoln-Douglas debates, but as long as there have been barstools, there have been men sitting on those stools arguing about sports. This week, John Paulsen and Anthony Stalter sit at a virtual bar and debate whether or not the San Antonio Spurs qualify as a dynasty. Take a seat, order a beverage and feel free to give us your two cents...

The NBA announced Monday that New York Knicks forward Al Harrington has been named the NBA Eastern Conference Player Of The Week for games played between December 8-14. Tim Duncan All-Star forward for the San Antonio Spurs was awarded the honor in the Western Conference. Harrington was traded to New York from the Golden State Warriors [...]

Game Of The Night: Cavaliers v. Spurs

(ESPN 9:30PM ET)? Don?t forget sports fans, it was the Spurs who swept the Cavs right out of the Finals back in 2007.? As much I love LeBron and the other guys, I like these guys better.? I like the Spurs better.? Cleveland?s only salvation is, Tim Duncan may not play.? Get your popcorn ...

Revisiting the Ben Wallace Signing

It seems like "everybody knows" that Chicago made a mistake signing Ben Wallace, who is rapidly becoming the poster child/scapegoat for the underachieving Bulls--but "everybody" does not seem to remember the exact circumstances in which that deal was made and the unappetizing alternatives that the Bulls had--unless you think that Nazr Mohammed or Joel Przybilla...

Kevin Love vs. Joey Dorsey

This is a match up the pro scouts will be watching extremely closely, as it pits two of the top power forwards in the collegiate ranks. Unfortunately, as Kevin Love moves up the draft board, Joey Dorsey is still considered a second round pick, I don't get it? Now I realize that Joey Dorsey doesn't possess the offensive skills of a polished low post scorer, but doesn't...

Trading Pau Gasol is a Step into the Abyss

It has been reported that new Memphis Grizzlies coach Mark Iavaroni met with Pau Gasol in Barcelona last week. Hopefully it was an attempt to bring Gasol back into the fold of wanting to continue his career in Memphis. It was probably a two way process because as an NBA lifer, Iavaroni has to know that his job will be much easier with a motivated and engaged Pau Gasol. He also...

Day 144 of 170: Mike Miller Uses the Power of the Headband for Good

Line of the Night: Mike Miller (9.4) had a spectacular game, scoring 34 points while shooting 12-16 from the floor and hitting 7 threes. He also had 7 boards, 4 assists, and a steal and block apiece. But don't get too excited Mike Miller owners, the game came against – surprise, surprise - the New York Knicks, who allowed Memphis to score 120 points.

"Marbury Effect" May Tip the Balance in Tight Race for Top Seed

After Cleveland's disappointing loss in Boston on Friday, some commentators took the predictable and easy route of jumping off of the Cavs' bandwagon and proclaiming that the Celtics will finish with the best record in the Eastern Conference. This is yet another example of hype and superficiality triumphing over thoughtful analysis. As things stand right now, the Cavs...

Watch Out for the Denver Nuggets...as They Slide Down in the Standings

All we've been hearing about since the Allen Iverson-Chauncey Billups trade is how Iverson is destroying the Detroit Pistons while Billups is revitalizing the Denver Nuggets. Meanwhile, I've kept saying two things:1) Besides the well known salary cap relief that the Pistons can obtain by not re-signing Iverson, Iverson can have an impact this season by potentially making...
