Since folks have already been talking about here is the always excellent Luke Winn and his column on Ty Lawson and Villanova’s Dante Cunningham back when they played together on the same youth basketball team coached by their fathers at Andrews AFB in Maryland.

The Andrews Magic went 80-7 over an eight-year span that began in ‘95, regularly “playing up” — against local competition at least 1-2 years older than their age group. Dante Cunningham said he recently looked through an old scrapbook that the two coaches had put together, and found a sheet in which they had asked each player — when they were just 11 — to state what college they dreamed of playing for. Dante wrote down Michigan, or Georgetown, which had recently been the homes of Chris Webber and Allen Iverson, respectively. Ty Lawson listed just one school: North Carolina. “When I saw that,” Cunningham said, “I thought, ‘Wow. That’s crazy, that he already knew back then.’”

Long before Lawson would become a Tar Heel, win the 2009 ACC Player of the Year award, or be named the South Region’s Most Outstanding Player, he was just a 4-year-old flying up and down the court with his father, who would bring Ty along to the Andrews gym if he agreed to do two hours of drill-work on fundamentals. The most famous were what they called “commando” ballhandling drills, where George would stand at midcourt and shout out a series of commands — such as, in-and-out, crossover and behind the back — as Ty dribbled at him. Ty eventually learned to perform the moves instantaneously. “You have to be able to do stuff like that in games without thinking,” George said. “It got to the point where I’d be able to yell out five or six in a row and he’d finish them before he got to me.”

Good story, be sure to read the whole article.

UNC And A Slow Tempo Game

Ken Pomeroy says UNC handles it just fine. You hear this all of the time. UNC will not be as successful in a slower tempo game. Pomeroy says the numbers do not support it. In the final minute of the first half of Sunday’s game between North Carolina and Oklahoma, Clark Kellogg noted that despite the Sooners being dominated on both ends of the floor, the game was being...

Allen Iverson Whines About his Role, Won’t Be a Team-Player

I thought for quite some time that the back injury that caused Allen Iverson to miss 16 games was just a case of bruised ego more than anything else. I felt that Iverson didn’t know how to handle his benching so his only response was to disappear and cool off. Looks like my [...]

Congratulations Tar Heels.... zzzzzz.....

Congratulations to North Carolina, who won their ninety-fifth national championship in men's basketball tonight, making the city of Detroit even sadder than usual. Which, considering the employment situation in this state, is really saying something. They were so hoping for a win tonight, so they could tip over some cars that would have to be replaced.UNC had the most first half...

TOES LAWSON FEELING LUCKY IN DETROIT

AP – Norrth Carolina guard Ty Lawson has already won big at the Final Four. Don't expect the NCAA to make commercials about it, though. Hours after arriving in Detroit, the North Carolina point guard hit a downtown casino and left with a little extra cash. "We got in last night, and Coach [Roy Williams] gave us a curfew of 1:30," Lawson said when asked if he had visited...

It’s UNC

Last summer, Ty Lawson got ticketed for underage drinking and then driving (although not a DWI), which apparently kept the Pacers from drafting him in the first round which led to his return to school.  Whoever that cop was, UNC fans are likely to send him bouquets Tuesday morning.  He's ...

Ty Lawson is the ultimate dice controller

Not only is Ty Lawson regarded as the best point guard in the country, it seems he has handles off the court as well. Craps is probably my favorite pit game in the casino and it seems like the reigning ACC Player of the Year has the same affinity for the dice. “Actually, I already played,” [...]

Ty Lawson Loves His Craps

On Friday we learned that Ty Lawson had won $250 playing craps during his down time in Detroit as the Tarheels' prepared for the Final Four.We got in last night, and Coach (Roy Williams) gave us a curfew of 1:30, Lawson said when asked if he had visited any casinos. I went over to Greektown and won about $250. So I already had my time there. It's probably the last time I...

Allen Iverson...WTF?

For the longest time, I did not like Allen Iverson. I thought he was just another guard in the league that wanted to shoot, shoot, shoot. He would put points on the floor, yes. He would cross everybody over to the ground, yes. But that's all I saw him as. I didn't see anything else. Then, he got to the NBA Finals and started playing my Lakers. At that point, the Lakers...

Tarheels win another title

Over 72,000 fans gathered in Ford Field to witness the North Carolina Tarheels beat the Michigan State Spartans 89-72 on Monday night. The Spartans definitely had the home court advantage, but failed to deliver on the court. Led by All-Americans Tyler Hansbrough and Ty Lawson, North Carolina blitzed MSU early and never looked back.A season ago the Tarheels were defeated in the national...

Fiddlin' and Diddlin' - Daily Links 4/6

Herald Danny Ainge’s hopes high for playoffs FL's Take: I think the Celtics have an excellent chance to repeat if they are healthy. Both the Cavs and Lakers depend on one star, both of whom have played non-stop since last season with the Olympics over the summer, and have had to play heavy minutes during the season. They are both starting to show a few cracks in their armor...

Sixers Hosts Iverson-Less Pistons for Saturday Matinee

This preview comes courtesy of Andrew Unterberger.   Since ties were cut between the 76ers and Allen Iverson over two and a half seasons ago, the former face of the franchise has had only one real homecoming back in Philly--last season's remarkably poignant visit as a member of the Denver Nuggets. After a stunningly emotional ovation...

2009 College Basketball National Championship Prediction

North Carolina vs Michigan St.The Spartans have done the unthinkable. They were a pretty inconsistent team at times this season but turned on their game in March. Give credit to MSU coach Tom Izzo, he always has his team ready to play in the Big Dance. Defense, rebounding, and offensive efficiency have gotten them over the top.Michigan St. will get to play in front of their home...

One of Ty Lawson's Record 8 Steals

Well, not exactly a thriller of a game, especially when compared to last year's championship game. I do wonder if the outcome would've been different if Michigan State would have played the first half the way they played in the second half. As I mentioned on Sunday, the key for MSU was to get an early lead or to stay within single digits early. MSU simply doesn't excel...

NBA Decisions Still Forthcoming For UNC

Of course because, believe it or not, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington and Ed Davis did not spend the final TV timeout figuring out what they wanted to do next. I have no idea why reporters even ask the question. For the record here is the response: “I have no idea,’’ said Williams, one of only 13 coaches to win multiple titles. “We haven’t talked about it one second...
