Before Athens in 2004 anything short of Olympic gold is seen as a failure.
When Team USA returned from Athens in 2004 with the bronze medal, the program was changed.
In 2005, USA Basketball put the responsibility in the hands of Colangelo, the former chairman of the Phoenix Suns. He demanded three-year commitments from everyone involved with the team.
"We needed commitments from coaches and players alike," said Jerry Colangelo, managing director of the USA national team program
USA Basketball announced the 12 players who will represent the United States this summer in Beijing:
Denver's Carmelo Anthony, Utah's Carlos Boozer, Toronto's Chris Bosh, the Los Angeles Lakers' Kobe Bryant, Orlando's Dwight Howard, Cleveland's LeBron James, Dallas's Jason Kidd, New Orleans's Chris Paul, Detroit's Tayshaun Prince, Milwaukee's Michael Redd, Miami's Dwyane Wade and Utah's Deron Williams.
Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce, chose not to make such a commitment.
There are some questions about 12-man squad:
*Its lack of balance, with only one true center in Howard, after Stoudemire withdrew his name last week.
*Two power forwards: Boozer and Bosh.
*Also three point guards, including Kidd, who is 35.
"I think ball handling and defending the point, that's where it all starts," Krzyzewski said. "In the past, We didn't have the strength, at the point guard position"
*Problem could be the team's ability to shoot from the outside.
But Redd is chosen specifically to fill that role.
Anthony, Boozer, James, and Wade played in Athens four years ago when the United States lost to Argentina. That team, widely regarded as too inexperienced .
Two years later, at the 2006 world championship, the United States had not yet improved, although the outcome was not as surprising as its sixth-place finish in 2002.
The team meat in Las Vegas for a two-day training camp Before it starts daily training July 21-24. Then they are scheduled to play nine friendly games, trying to build chemistry.
The U.S. team play Aug. 10, in a preliminary-round against China.

Video - Brock Lesnar reigning terror on Randy Couture
The fight was competitive at first, but by the time Brock Lesnar was pounding Randy Couture with his huge "ham hocks," it was looking easy for Lesnar, who looks like he is indeed the UFC's "Next Big Thing".
It will be extremely hard for anyone to match Lesnar's talent-size-speed combination for a while. Think Shaq tossing everyone like a rag doll during...
My Life as a Basketball Game Announcer
Recently I took a job as an announcer and host for a touring basketball show team. I'm purposely not naming this team so that I don't violate the terms of my contract, ruffle any feathers, burn any bridges, hurt any feelings, etc, etc.
Sounds like a dream job right- pretty girls, exciting games, floor seats? Well I'm not that naive. I knew it would be hard work...

What a Fool Believes...
"What a Fool Believes" is a great Doobie Brothers song from the 1978 album "Minute by Minute." It reached number one on the pop charts in 1979 and won Grammys as both "Song of the Year" and "Record of the Year." What does that have to do with basketball? Here are some of the lyrics: "But what a fool believes he sees/No wise man has the...

No man is an island but he could be a beach ball.
Some people may be tempted to support Kobe Bryant with a wholly youthful team. Although as a Los Angeles Lakers fan my favorite kind of Basketball to watch is one of speed, driving to the hoop and fast passing, judging from the results of the NBA finals this year it may be worth thinking about a tall...

Charles Barkley doesn’t deny he drove drunk but don’t accuse him of hanging with Urkle
You can say a lot of things about Charles Barkley like he’s overweight, has a bad golf swing, never won an NBA championship and that he is guilty of driving under the influence in an attempt to get sexual favors but don’t you dare say that Charles hangs out with Urkle, drinks wine coolers or ...
Daily Debate: Is Alvin Gentry the man to lead the Suns forward?
The Suns tumultuous season is drawing to a close. Assuming the Suns don?t pull off the miraculous, which pains us to say, what direction does this team head in? If Seven Seconds or Less is here to stay should Alvin Gentry be as well?

Suns Burn Hot But Flameout Mavericks Win 122-117
The Phoenix Suns shot a blazing 55.2% (48-87) and point guard Steve Nash recorded a double-double but the depleted Suns roster still did not have enough as they lost at home to the Dallas Mavericks 122-117. Dirk Nowitzki led the way for the Mavericks as he also had a double-double, with a game high 34 points in the win. The loss for Phoenix leaves them just 4 games over .500 as they...
