The Wizards shot 32% from the floor in front of a large crowd of empty chairs, falling to the Denver Nuggets 77-70 in game 2 of their Summer League schedule. Nick Young scored 17 points and again had zero assists. I'll have to check this, but I'm not sure if I've seen Nick pass since these games began. To be fair, I didn't see anyone passing much either, as the Wiz settled for a lot of bad shots with a hand in their face. There was too much dribbling, too much standing around and, on the part of the few people actually watching the game, too much snoring. The best part of the game was Javale McGee's defense. He had 5 blocks, including a few beauties, and also grabbed 8 rebounds -- a definite improvement over his hairbrained game 1 performance. It was more of the same from Andray Blatche. He seemed inattentive and lazy at times, but he was also clearly the most talented player on the court and he finished with 27 points and 15 rebounds. [Aside from Young and Blatche, I'm not sure anyone in a Wizards uniform hit a shot.] Andray is still not in good shape and he settles for too many outside jumpers. He also needs to quit trying to play point guard and lead fast breaks -- it doesn't work. The team missed Javaris Crittenton, who sat out so Blatche, Young, McGee and Dominic McGuire could all play. Tyrese Rice was the primary ball-handler and it doesn't appear to me he's going to earn a job in the NBA based on what he did last night. The Nuggets trapped Rice and the Wizards offense early and often and Washington had no answer for it. Crittenton would have handled it better and made Denver pay more for gambling on defense. McGuire was terrible in his first Summer League game this year. He hit 1 of 7 shots, committed 6 turnovers and just seemed to dribble all over the place to no real purpose. McGuire tried to show what he could do on offense last night and all he showed is how far he still has to go. Once again, Josh Heytvelt, the player I was most interested in watching when the Summer League games began, hardly played. Did this guy piss off someone on the coaching staff? I don't get it. Heytvelt is the most talented player on the roster who hasn't already played in an NBA game, but the coaching staff has hardly let him take his warm-ups off. I hope that changes soon.

Young drives Wizards in opener

LAS VEGAS | Nick Young was the only Washington Wizards player to appear in every game last season, and that experience clearly carried over to the start of the NBA Summer League. Young scored a game-high 36 points, and the Wizards recovered from blowing a late 14-point lead to edge the Cleveland Cavaliers 96-93 on Tuesday night at Thomas & Mack Center. "Nick made himself...

Praise Flip, But Don’t Blame Eddie: Looking At Andray Blatche

When I hear about Flip Saunders saying he’s a teacher before a coach, about how he and his assistants (namely Sam Cassell) have been working with the young guys, that he, being an ‘offensive mind’, has developed a mini-playbook for the summer league team and that he’ll be observing from a close distance on-site in [...]

More From Summer League

In today's newspaper, Dan Steinberg wrote about why Andray Blatche switched jersey numbers, and in the Sports Bog he reported on last night's loss to the Nuggets.

Blatche In, McGuire out

Mild surprise out here in Vegas, as Dominic McGuire emerged from the locker room of the Thomas & Mack Center in street clothes, and Andray Blatche came out in uniform. The team can only dress four NBA vets, and JaVale McGee, Javaris Crittenton, Nick Young and Blatche will fill those spots. Meanwhile, this is Blatche's fourth time playing in Summer League, which means he should...

Blatche Remembers His Shattered Blackboard

The Wizards were off Thursday, and will resume Summer League action Friday. Instead of going out and enjoying the 110 weather, I went to watch them practice at Durango High, 15 or so minutes from the strip. A few notes: Durango Like Home The gym has good karma for the Wizards. Mike Miller, who worked out at the school before his teammates, used the gym to boost his high school ranking...

Wizards Back in Action Today

After a day off on Thursday, the Wizards play the Minnesota Timberwolves tonight in Summer League play. Yesterday Dan Steinberg reported on Mike Miller's memories of his pet monkey and on Andray Blatche's backboard busting. Plus this comment from Antawn Jamison popped up on Yahoo!Sports.
