With two-time All-Star, Elton Brand moving East to join the Philadelphia 76ers, his former team, the Los Angeles Clippers are looking to fill the void left by Brand at the power forward spot. In 2006-2007, Zach Randolph averaged a career best 23.6 points for the Portland Trailblazers before he was traded to New York on draft day for Channing Frye and Steve Francis. The double-double machine, in his first season with New York, averaged 17.6 points and 10.3 rebounds. The ex-Spartan shot 46% from the field and 77% from the stripe. The 6'9" forward had some of his best games against the western competition averaging 27 points vs. Memphis, 25 vs. Portland, 24 vs. Utah, 22.5 vs. Dallas and 21.7 vs. New Orleans. In the 23 games the Knicks won he put up close to 19 points per game and shot 50% from the field. Randolph has been in the league for six years and averages close to a double-double for his career.
However, with three years left and $48 million dollars owed to him it is hard to move that kind of albatross contract. Breaking it down per year he is owed $14.6 million next season, $16 million in 09-10 and $17.3 million in 2010-11.
Donnie Walsh is not looking to take back any lengthy contracts in return and already rejected a second-round pick for Randolph from the Clippers. By declining this offer Walsh is working at his own pace and will only settle for a deal that will benefit the future of the franchise. The team has been shopping the 26 year-old for a while now and getting under the cap for 2010 is imperative.
If number 50 is finally moved I will be very pleased. He is not a team player and is vastly overpaid. He averaged 2.70 turnovers a game, is a mediocre defender and passer, often showed poor shot selection in the post and hoisted up unnecessary 3-pointers. Zebo shot just 27% behind the arc and has not played 80 or more games since the 03-04 season. His double-doubles could be one of the most wasted stats in the game. Now we know why the Trailblazers accepted so little in return.
The Clippers are a very young team, with an average age of 25.2 years. Chris Kaman, Al Thornton and this year's rookies DeAndre Jordan and Eric Gordon seem untouchable. With the loss of Brand to free agency, the team needs to replace his post offense and rebounding with an interior presence. The Clippers were second to last in offense in the league, scoring only 93.80 points per game. Realistically, the Knicks would want to obtain a player like Josh Powell, a move like this would make sense because he earned around $800,000 last season. Powell is the same height as Zebo and averaged 9.2 points and 7.6 rebounds as a starter. The Knicks don't need another high-priced veteran, such as 32 year old, Cuttino Mobley, who made over $8 million last season, and plays a shooting guard position the Knicks have plenty of. However, for a deal to work to work out acquiring Mobley could be in the equation. The "Cat" has two years left on his contract and has averaged 16.1 points for four different teams in his 11-year NBA career. He would be a good fit in the new Knicks system and would step in nicely if Jamal Crawford is moved.
The Clippers have made the playoffs only twice in the past 12 years. They won a team high 47 games during the 2005-2006 season. Team owner Donald Sterling is not typically known for emptying his wallet for talent, but he did sign Elton Brand to a big contract and he did spend the last seven seasons in Los Angeles. More recently, the signing of high-caliber point guard, Baron Davis to a lucrative long-tem deal.
The Knicks however, have endured seven straight losing seasons under Jeff Van Gundy, Don Chaney, Lenny Wilkens, Herb Williams, Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas. Walsh needs to start correcting the mistakes Thomas made when constructing this team. So far, first round selection Danilo Gallinari has been impressive in practice and will make his official summer league debut today vs. the Cleveland Cavaliers in Las Vegas. Coach Mike D'Antoni has been raving about second-year small forward Wilson Chandler and eight-year veteran Quentin Richardson, who made 226 3-pointers in 2004-2005 under D'Antoni, arrived in camp in much better shape than a year ago. If Randolph is moved soon, and David Lee stays, the drop-off in production between Randolph and Lee should be minimal.
