Jazz fans may need some extra hugs this year. Here’s your guide to survive the season. Photo: thebreakaway.net I’m not much of a believer in omens, but it’s hard not having dark thoughts when the brightest spot for the Utah Jazz went dark with Trey Burke’s injury sidelining him 8-10 weeks with a broken finger. This season will be a struggle for the Jazz and their fans, who if they wish to keep their hair and sanity need to look at the silver linings, which is why I created the Jazz fan’s survival guide to the 2013-2014 season. Home Losses will happen. Accept it. With one of the best attendances in the league the Jazz have always had a good home court advantage, but their reaches a point where the lack of talent nullifies that benefit and that point has been reached. The Jazz will fall at home, often. As a viewer and broadcast junkie I always get very excited to hear Craig Bolerjack and Matt Harpring call games for the Jazz. The two of them will help us all bear through this season’s growing pains, one homered-Harpring outburst at a time. Appreciate individual play One thing that can make watching a young team like Utah more enjoyable is focusing on certain players shine. Enes Kanter and Derrick Favors should make huge jumps this year. Sit back and keep a grand scheme mentality when watching. Don’t get upset if Kanter is getting bullied in November. Watch him grow and then be mad if he hasn’t made improvements in March. If Trey Burke comes in looking like a premier point guard yet the team continues to lose, progress is still being made. Countdown to the lottery & become a scout Losing sucks, and it’s nothing any fan should ever be happy about. But with more losses comes better lottery odds, and this years draft class is one of highest touted ones in recent memory. The draft  for the Jazz this past year was, well.. fun. Pulling off the trade in the draft to get Burke and snagging Gobert was actually very exciting, and created great buzz for Jazz fans. The Jazz who are near the bottom of the Western Conference in many projections aren’t expected to make the playoffs, which means more better, young talent is headed Utah’s way. So keep up with the stars in college hoops, they could have a Jazz jersey on next year. View it like they’re potential investments in the stock market. These are the little things that will make life as a jazz fan better. Be a realist Although as a fan you want to be competitive with teams like the Heat, Thunder and Spurs, fans should focus on how the Jazz perform against teams of slightly better and equal talent than the Jazz. Teams like the Suns, Bucks, Nuggets just to name a few. As a fan can you really glance at our roster and be mad about losing to the Brooklyn Nets, who literally has an all-star at every starting position? Pick up fantasy basketball If you watch a lot of NBA aside from just the Jazz I strongly encourage picking up fantasy basketball. It heightens interest in the dullest of games and can add to your overall rooting interest. That way when *Insert player* goes off against the Jazz it will sting a little less if he’s racking in fantasy points for your team. Keep the future in mind Just remember it’s always bitter before it’s sweet as a fan. The Jazz organization cares about winning and is doing things to get the Jazz in a position to win. Believe in the plan and don’t lose hope. There are pieces in place here in Utah, but time and experience are necessary before the Jazz become championship contenders again. These points should help you survive the 2013-2014 Utah Jazz season.
