Once thought of as one of  the centerpieces of the franchise, the Rockets traded away Aaron Brooks to Phoenix in exchange for Goran Dragic.  After having a career 2010 season and winning the NBA’s Most Improved Player award, Brooks hurt his ankle early in the season causing him to miss 25 games.  That injury opened the door for backup point guard, Kyle Lowry, and he made the best of his time, which made Brooks expendable.  Daryl Morey, Houston’s GM, is known for shaking up the roster with trades in an attempt to infuse the team with young talent while stockpiling picks.  Brooks is one of the most gifted scoring guards in the league, who can be unguardable in pick-and-roll situations at times.  He thrives in the up-tempo style the Suns play and should invigorate the second unit.  Although he will be backing up Steve Nash, once Brooks gets healthy he will show everyone he can still do it hoping to sign a restricted free agent contract where he has an opportunity to play significant minutes.

Aaron Brooks joined KILT in Houston to talk about whether he was surprised to hear that he had been traded, why being traded doesn’t come as a surprise , and whether he is surprised by the downturn of interest in him as a key player to the Rockets franchise.

When the Suns expect him to meet up with them:

“Maybe the Raptors game or Indiana.”

Whether he was surprised to hear that he had been traded:

“Surprised by the team, but as far as being traded, no.”

Why being traded doesn’t come as a surprise:

“Well Daryl (Morey) is a shaker, mover, he likes to find different pieces and pile up picks.  Kyle is playing good basketball so I think you guys are pretty solid at the point guard position and maybe they feel comfortable with that.  I mean he is a great player so I wish the best for everybody here.  I love my fans, my teammates.  I think it is time to move on and time to do something else.”

Whether he is surprised by the downturn of interest in him as a key player to the Rockets franchise:

“To be honest with you, you go out there and you give it your all and you know I haven’t really been healthy all year and at the beginning of the year I played pretty well.  I took my injury and I am trying to get healthy.  I know I can play basketball and I know what I am capable of doing and I am just ready to show everybody what I am capable of so if I was 30 or something like that and I had a bad year and I would be sad, something like that.  I am just ready for a fresh start and this will be a good opportunity for me.”

What it is like to leave his teammates:

“I mean I still talk to guys from college.  Those guys are going to be friends, period.  I am saying ‘they’ that is like my family still.  I am still going to talk to them.  We are still going to communicate, probably not as much but we always have refreshed it there.  It hurts to leave them.  It hurts to leave the coaching staff, I love the coaching staff, but it is the business.  You can’t get too attached to a situation because everything can change.  You got to keep that in mind.  There is always worse situations you could be in so I keep that in mind and like I said, this is another opportunity for me to go out there and play, and I am in the NBA.  I am in the NBA and it is a dream come true, still, so got to keep that in mind.”
