Allen Iverson has officially signed with the Memphis
Grizzlies. Iverson followed the Kevin Love trend as he announced the news today on his Twitter
account. Shortly after Iverson made the announcement, Adrian Wojnarowski of
Yahoo Sports confirmed the deal as a one-year, $3.5 million contract.
In terms of the amount of value the Grizzlies are receiving for cost, this is a
terrific signing. Anytime you can get a player who averages more than 20 PPG,
can sell jerseys and increase attendance for less then $5 million, you do it.
But in terms of matching up the players based on their position and style of
play, this is one of the most ridiculous signings ever. The Grizzlies now have four players who have a shoot first, pass second style of play (Mayo, Gay, Randolph and
Iverson).
Another negative of this signing is the influence that Iverson will have on OJ
Mayo. OJ showed a lot of promise his rookie season but also showed a tendency
to take too many jumpers when other guys had wide-open shots. Imagine what a
veteran presence like Allen Iverson will do to his game.
