After months of negotiation the Cleveland Cavaliers and guard/forward Alonzo Gee agreed to a 3 year deal totaling just under $10 million, with the 3rd year not gauranteed.

The Cavs remained committed to resigning Gee, repeatedly saying he was their number one priority in free agency.

“From the start of free agency, we made it clear that re-signing Alonzo was important to us, and we’re happy we’ve been able to do that.  Alonzo has worked very hard to make the most of the opportunities he has had thus far, and it has been great to see his development and growth as a Cavalier. We’re excited he will be part of our team as our young group of players continues to grow together.”

Cavs General Manager Chris Grant

Gee averaged 10.6 points, 5.1 rebounds while starting in 31 games last season. Gee after working his way from the NBA D-League found a home with the Cavs and his hard work has earned him some stability with the team.

For both the Cavs and Gee, this move made sense. The Cavs had no one to fill the role that Gee would leave void if he left, and Gee didn’t have many suitors to leverage against the Cavs. Another year under Byron Scott and a full off season to prepare, I would expect Gee to perform better than he did last season.

The Cavs have a very young team, so you need players like Gee who may be young, but have experience who can help the progress of the rookies and second year players. The Cavs look to be building a young team that will grow together for years to come.
