After displaying a productive performance in his first start of the season against the Los Angeles Lakers, San Antonio Spurs forward Tiago Splitter won’t be starting tonight against the undefeated (5-0) New York Knicks.
No, it wasn’t Splitter’s performance that put him back on the bench; it was matchups according to Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich.
“DeJuan Blair will start tonight,” said Popovich, “different teams provide different matchups from time to time.”
Popovich also mentioned that Manu Ginobili will play tonight against the Knicks even though Ginobili was having some back issues against the Lakers.
On the other side of the arena, Knicks head coach Mike Woodson mentioned how the league has shifted to a more offensive style of play. Woodson said more teams want to run in the open court and shoot from the outside.
Woodson didn’t know who was going to start for the Spurs, but did mention that Tim Duncan would be matched with Tyson Chandler. This means that Blair will likely get the opportunity to defend the Knicks’ scoring machine Carmelo Anthony.
