In a separate post for New York Sports 24/7 I noted how when pressed by Matt Miller of Bloomberg TV about rumors concerning him signing with the Los Angeles Lakers during free agency in 2014 Carmelo Anthony answered rather ambiguously. However, Anthony gave a pretty straight forward answer right after the event, during Bloomberg TV’s Market Makers: “Yeah, I’m not going nowhere,” Anthony said. But as ESPN’s Ian Begley points out, Anthony’s guarantee that he’s staying in New York doesn’t mean he won’t choose to opt out of his contract with the New York Knicks at the end of the 2013-14 season. Assuming that Anthony signs a max contract during his free agency, should he opt out of his current contract and re-sign with the Knicks he could sign a five-year contract worth nearly $130 million, according to ESPN. That’s about $34 million more than he’d be contractually able to get by signing with another team after opting out. If Anthony honors the entirety of his current contract and then re-signs with the Knicks, his max contract would be worth more than $140 million for five years. However, doing so would mean Anthony forgoes the advantage of testing the market during free-agency. Basically Anthony makes more by staying in New York no matter if he opts out of his contract or not. And given Anthony’s forthrightness about “not going nowhere,” Knicks fans should be reassured by the current outlook for the future of the franchise. And yet Anthony’s financial consultants, business managers and partners surely made clear the financial advantages of playing for another team beyond the value of a contract. Other cities could offer Anthony a more favorable income tax, for example, which may be one of the reasons why Dwight Howard decided to sign with the Houston Rockets instead of re-signing with the Los Angeles Lakers. Also, building a “billion-dollar brand” is something Anthony spoke about with Bloomberg TV and pursues aggressively, most recently with his new sports drink PowerCoco. The strength of the Lakers brand and Anthony’s personal branding strategies are what lend some fans to believe that Anthony’s considering signing with the Lakers. I believe Anthony—he’s not going anywhere. As we learned a few years ago, when Anthony publicly stated that he wanted his then current team the Denver Nuggets to trade him, Anthony seems to know what he wants and is unafraid to voice it. That appears to be the case right now.   Lucas Rubio is a columnist for NYSports247.com and author of Playerz League Sports Blog. Follow him on Twitter @PlayerzLeague.
