Mike Brown walked up to Andrew Bynum at the Lakers training facility Saturday, laughing and making the usual post-practice small talk. The mood around the team was significantly lighter one day after the Lakers coach departed Staples Center before a game against the Denver Nuggets to attend to an undisclosed family matter. Brown declined to discuss the reason that prompted him to leave his team, calling it a personal issue. It was one of those instances where it was time to be with the family, Brown said, and I felt it was the right thing for me to leave. Brown will be back when the Lakers play host to the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday afternoon at Staples Center, but Kobe Bryant probably wont. The coach said his star shooting guard would probably miss a fifth consecutive game because of a sore left shin. Brown said he watched part of the Lakers 103-97 victory over the Nuggets, including Matt Browns 16-foot fadeaway jumper at the halftime buzzer. The coach said he joked with his assistants that Brown made the shot only after closing his eyes. Assistant John Kuester coached the Lakers in Browns absence. Brown said the Lakers deep stable of assistant coaches means his team will always be in capable hands. You hate to say this as a head coach, but I feel like I have one, two, three I mean, I have four guys on my staff that are capable of being head coaches next year with Darvin Ham on his way, Brown said. So whether Im here or somebody else is here or not, the staff that I have is terrific. --Ben Bolch

Brown, Bynum define their terms

Lakers Coach Mike Brown and center Andrew Bynum have had some, uh, entertaining moments in their first season together. Bynum hated it when Brown kissed him on the forehead after a late tip-in during a victory over Boston. Bynum also didn't like being yanked for his well-documented three-point attempt last month against Golden State. But Brown said they were fine. "Are...

Bynum on upper respiratory infection: 'I can't breathe'

As he ran up and down the court, Andrew Bynum took deep breaths. It had little to do with the normal fatigue that surrounds a typical basketball game. It had everything to do with fighting an upper respiratory infection he suffered the night before the Lakers' 112-108 overtime victory Sunday over the Dallas Mavericks. "It was just hard to breathe," said Bynum, who...

Bynum's 30-board game no surprise to Lakers great

Elgin Baylor talks almost wistfully about the craft of rebounding, as if it's artwork that has been misplaced or a treasure trove that can't be retrieved from deep-sea waters. He was a 6-foot-5 forward for the Lakers when he took 30 rebounds in a 1961 game against the Cincinnati Royals. He was watching on TV when Andrew Bynum grabbed an equally striking 30 rebounds Wednesday...

Coach Kobe Bryant draws up play for Andrew Bynum during Lakers win (Video)

What you see in the clip above has been going on quite a bit over the past five games. Kobe Bryant has been riding the bench for a little over a week as he nurses a shin injury, but he has hardly been a non-factor for the Lakers. With Kobe on the bench, the Lakers have won their last four games. Rather than sitting there and simply playing the role of cheerleader for the team, Bryant...

Size matters more than ever with Kobe out

The San Antonio Spurs allowed Andrew Bynum to get 30 rebounds Wednesday night in a clear statement about the Lakers' size. The Dallas Mavericks lost to the Lakers 112-108 in overtime Sunday, and it's becoming clearer, with Kobe Bryant resting his sore left shin, that the Lakers' size remains daunting to Western Conference opponents. "They're tough," Dallas...

Lakers beat Nuggets minus Kobe, Brown

Andrew Bynum had 30 points and eight rebounds, Matt Barnes added a season-high 24 points and the Los Angeles Lakers clinched a playoff berth without Kobe Bryant or coach Mike Brown, holding off the Denver Nuggets 103-97 Friday night. Pau Gasol had 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Pacific Division-leading Lakers (38-22), who've now won three of four without Bryant. The NBA scoring...

Lakers 112, Mavericks 108, OT

Andrew Bynum had 23 points and 16 rebounds, Pau Gasol made back-to-back 3-pointers in overtime, and the Los Angeles Lakers won their fourth straight game without Kobe Bryant, 112-108 over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. Ramon Sessions scored 22 points, and Gasol had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who are 4-1 while the NBA's leading scorer rests his bruised shin. ...

Andrew Bynum > Dwight Howard? Get the hell out of here

I’m not sure if he’s serious, looking for page views, or just following editor’s orders, but someone emailed me this gem by J.A. Adande this morning. How Andrew Bynum trumps Howard. It reads exactly like you’d think it would read, some stretching of pointless stats to try and blow up Andrew Bynum and belittle Dwight [...]

THE DUALITY OF ANDREW BYNUM: LAKERS BEAST AND BRAT ALL IN ONE!!

Andrew Bynum’s presence gives the Lakers a shot at a deep playoff run. If he can mature as a leader, that is. I knew ANDREW BYNUM had no respect for MIKE BROWN. The Los Angeles Lakers’ star center revealed as much during his ESPN interview with Mike Tirico… Bynum said he is not going to have someone who has never played basketball tell him what type of shot he should take...

Lakers top Mavs in OT for fourth straight win

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Andrew Bynum had 23 points and 16 rebounds, Pau Gasol made back-to-back 3-pointers in overtime, and the Los Angeles Lakers won their fourth straight game without Kobe Bryant, 112-108 over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. Ramon Sessions scored 22 points, and Gasol had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Lakers, who are 4-1 while the NBA's leading scorer rests...

Mavericks miss chance to top Lakers in OT

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Andrew Bynum had 23 points and 16 rebounds, Pau Gasol made back-to-back 3-pointers in overtime, and the Los Angeles Lakers won their fourth straight game without Kobe Bryant, 112-108 over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday. Kobe’s absence good for the Lakers?

Can the Los Angeles Lakers win without their superstar shooting guard Kobe Bryant in the lineup? Well Bryant has only been out five games while resting his bruised shin but the Lakers are 4-1 in his absence. Everybody has pitched in to help keep the Lakers in the win column but if there is one lesson that L.A.’s big men will learn from Bryant’s absence is that things are so...
