MVN:
The drama surrounding the Cleveland Cavaliers -- and especially their shooting guard position -- took another turn on Thursday night.Brian Windhorst of the Cleveland Plain Dealer reported that the Cavaliers are on the lookout for another guard, preferably a combo guard to add depth behind incumbent and troubled starter Delonte West. This was actually something that was in the works before West's recent off-court problems. From Windhorst as of Friday morning:The Cavs are considering adding another guard to the mix, according to
multiple league sources. They have been making calls on some remaining
free agents and testing the trade-market waters to see who might be
available.Even before Delonte West was facing a possible suspension after he was arrested and charged with illegal gun possession last week it
was arguable the team could use another ball handler. Mo Williams and
West are the only two players on the team that have proven they can
play point guard. Daniel Gibson has done it but hasn't proven he can be
effective. Last season the Cavs' third-string point guard was Tarence
Kinsey, who was released in July.It is believed the team had some interest in former Cav Flip Murray
before Thursday when he agreed to a contract with the Charlotte
Bobcats. There are several other veteran guards who are without jobs as
the league prepares to open camps Monday. The list includes players like Chucky Atkins, Juan Dixon, Bobby
Jackson, Jerry Stackhouse and Jacque Vaughn. It is also possible the
team will look to trade for a guard or simply stand pat.The list of available guards is actually quite deep and a bit more talented than what you would expect to find at this time of year. Jackson and Stackhouse are the names that stand out on this end, especially given their playoff experience deep into May and even June. But Stackhouse's name is the one that stands out the most to me above the others. The 14-year veteran out of North Carolina played in just 10 games this past season in Dallas (apparently not by choice), and the following is an excerpt from a piece done on Stackhouse by NBA Fanhouse earlier this week:Right now [Sekou Smith of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution] is writing about pre-camp practices, and the showstopper is ... Jerry Stackhouse, a free agent cut loose in the Hedo Turkoglu-Shawn Marion swap. Stack turns 35 during the first week of the season, and he effectively sat out last season in Dallas (not by choice). He's just working out with the Hawks -- there have been no rumors of his addition to the roster.Smith and the Hawks players he's talked to hope that stance changes, because they think Stackhouse can help Atlanta this season. The last season in which Stackhouse played major minutes -- 2007-08 -- he had fallen off quite a bit, shooting 44% on two-pointers and 32% on threes. Since Stack is a scorer primarily, his efficiency needs to be decent to justify minutes. And in Dallas, his efficiency was no longer decent. Unless that's changed, Stackhouse probably doesn't merit NBA minutes.According to Windhorst, the Cavs have $1.99 million of their biannual exception left. The fact that the Cavs also have just 12 players with fully guaranteed contracts with three spots left should also make them an attractive destination for a veteran looking for a team. For a player like Stackhouse, being a key reserve on a Cavaliers team looking at a championship-or-bust season could be the best fit.Of course, for a 35-year old like Stackhouse who is a shell of who he used to be, a one-year contract is the only option for the Cavs. Maybe a non-guaranteed second year at the most. But even when Delonte West comes back following his run-in with the law last week, having Stackhouse backing up both the two and the three would add incredible depth for the Cavs. The 6'6" Stackhouse would be yet another big wing in head coach Mike Brown's stable, as well.Bringing back Flip Murray would have been ideal since he's used to working with Brown and LeBron James, but the other guys on this list of notable free agent guards besides Stackhouse are either too old or just not good enough to get excited about.
