Found July 07, 2013 on Celtics Spot:
The Boston Celtics opened up their Summer League stint with a 95-88 loss to the Orlando Magic. While it's nice to win ball games, the end result of these games aren't very significant in the minds of both head coaches and general managers. Instead, the focus is on each player's individual performance as each front office will consider a guy's Summer League output before inviting them to veteran's camp. Of course first round and early second round draft picks are essentially guaranteed camp invites but for other unsigned free agents, well, their futures aren't so certain. Both of these squads feature multiple tiers of talent. The one's expected to produce, produced but it wouldn't be the Summer League if there weren't a couple of dark horses emerging along the way. For the Celtics, it was the 13th overall pick of this year's draft, Kelly Olynyk, that led the way. Olynyk logged just shy of 27 minutes and he made good use of his floor time, scoring 25 points and grabbing 7 rebounds. The 7-footer out of Gonzaga also showcased his exceptional shooting touch by converting on 75% of his field goals including 2 of 4 shooting from three-point land. If there's anything to take away from Olynyk's performance today it's that he's more than capable of stepping in and playing a "stretch-4" role for his newly hired head coach, Brad Stevens. However, his defense worries me. Fab Melo showed some signs of improvement following a long season of D-League ball this past year. After a slow first half, Melo found his rhythm in the third and fourth quarters. The second year man out of Syracuse tallied an efficient 9 points to go along with 8 rebounds and 1 blocked shot. Melo displayed his usual goofiness and seemingly uncoordinated style of play but the improvements are there and they're noticeable. At this point, he can only get better as he continues to learn the game.  Tony Mitchell and Phil Pressey were also pretty impressive. Mitchell hung 16 points on the Orlando defense and he showed that he could be a solid corner three threat. Pressey on the other hand displayed his knack for running an offense. Although he had 4 assists to 5 turnovers you can't read too much into the miscues. It's the Summer League which means two things: A) These guys haven't had much practice time and B) This is the first time most of these guys have played together. Either way, I found Pressey to be impressive and he made his mark after Nolan Smith went down with an ankle injury, forcing him out of the game. The Celtics will play again tomorrow against the Detroit Pistons at 3:00 pm EST. Follow @TimMacLean_

The Legend of Kelly Olynyk grows in Orlando

It’s been said that from Kelly Olynyk’s flowing, golden locks comes an aura that can heal the sick. Actually, I’m the only one who said that, but what’s another wildly ridiculous overreaction to the “O’Klynyk” he’s been putting on here in Orlando.  And while we’re all having fun with the hyperbole while watching Olynyk’s play against a bunch of non-NBA competition...

Fab Melo taking charges: “GIMMIE THAAAAT!!!”

So Fab Melo is an ongoing project for the Celtics and so far in two summer league games he’s proven that he is still just that – a project.  But one thing that he has already developed into a pro form is his catch-phrase for when he takes charges.  During today’s complete thrashing against the Pistons, Fab took three charges and on the third, he lets out a huge scream, shouting...

The Boston Celtics have signed 7-footer Kelly Olynyk, their first-round draft choice. The Celtics traded up in last month's draft to pick Olynyk with the 13th overall selection. Olynyk made his summer league debut on Sunday and scored 25 points in the Celtics' 95-88 loss to the Houston Rockets. Boston Celtics want Kelly Olynyk to be more aggressive throughout Orlando Pro Summer League

(Photo courtesy of Boston Herald- Staff photo by John Wilcox.) ORLANDO- Late in the first quarter,Kelly Olynyk caught the ball at the top of the key with some airspace, but instead of taking the open 3-point shot, he hesitated, put the ball on the floor and was whistled for a travel. “If you’re open, shoot the ball,” shouted Celtics summer league coach Jay Larranaga. Olynyk...

Celtkicks: Summer League Day 2

Olynyk on day one: 25pts, 7 boards on 9/12 FG. Celtics rookies Kelly Olynyk and Colton Iverson brought out some nice kicks today, as did camp invite Phil Pressey. All three members of the C’s NBA Summer League team rolled with Nike today: Olynyk rocked the Kobe VII “World Basketball Festival” again, Iverson wore the Nike Hyperdisruptor & Pressey had on my personal fave...

The Fab Melo challenge facing the Celtics

The Celtics face a bit of a challenge with Fab Melo this season. The second year center is still not ready to be a contributor at the NBA level.  His movements on the floor were often slow yesterday, especially laterally.  He had trouble catching the ball.  And while it wasn’t all bad for Melo yesterday, it wasn’t great, either. So it would seem that another trip to Maine...

Underrated Stat of the Night - Magic 7/7

Despite a nice 25 points from Kelly Olynyk, the Celtics lost their Summer League opener to the Magic today, 95-88. In the standings, the Magic now have 5 points while the Celtics have just 2, as they led two quarters. But this one was still fun to watch. They don't need to win every exhibition game. And they have another one tomorrow. Today's USOTN goes to the performance...

Celtics Romp Pistons in Day 2 of Summer League

Following yesterday's loss, the Boston Celtics bounced back in a big way this afternoon, defeating the Detroit Pistons 93-63. With the win, the Celtics became just the fifth team in Summer League history to knock off another squad by 30 or more points. Although it's just the Summer League, that's a pretty impressive achievement considering these guys have only been playing...

Underrated Stat of the Night - Pistons 7/8

Today, the Celtics beat the Pistons easily down in Orlando, 93-63. Yesterday, the Pistons played really well in their win over the Nets, so I expected a good competition from them today. But they didn't play well at all. I'm not saying Boston didn't earn the win, but this one should've been closer. Due to the Pistons' performance, this one was really boring....
