Although most Boston sports fans were focused on the Patriots playing in the Super Bowl on Sunday, another one of the city’s professional teams started off the day on a winning note as the Boston Celtics defeated the Memphis Grizzlies at the “New Garden” by a final margin of 98-80. The home team would pull away in the closing moments of the first quarter, Memphis would threaten midway through the second period but the Celtics would get the lead back by the time the game reached the half. Boston then dominated most of the second half and the Grizzlies really were not a factor in the final 12 minutes of play.
Kevin Garnett was the leading scorer in the game with 24 points while Paul Pierce knocked down 21 points in the club’s fourth straight victory. Celtics forward Paul Pierce was named the Eastern Conference Player of the Week by the NBA for games played Monday, January 30th - Sunday, February 5th. During this period, Pierce helped the Celtics go 4-0, and averaged 22 points, 6.3 assists, and 5.8 rebounds.
