Some of you may remember Cuttino Mobley, others may not.

The former Rhode Island star was a 10-year pro in the NBA who played for four different teams over his career from 1998-2008 including the Houston Rockets, Orlando Magic, Sacramento Kings and Los Angeles Clippers.

While never an All-Star, Mobley had a solid career as a pro finishing with averages of 16 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game.

He was tough to guard as a slashing lefty who could just as easily take you to the basket as he could pull up at the three point line and drain a jumper. He was also very good on the defensive end of the floor, with long arms and great lateral quickness.

In short, he was a good all-around pro. A player’s player.

Facts are that Mobley is just as well-rounded off the floor, and has developed a business acumen allowing him to take advantage of what could be considered, well, a non-traditional business opportunity in Maine.

According to reports, Mobley is involved in helping legalized medical marijuana in the state of Maine. A total of $1.6 million dollars in financing for new marijuana dispensaries in the state has been traced to organizations fronted by the former NBA star.

According to other reports, Mobley’s role is that of a consultant. Essentially, he cuts a check for the operations of the dispensaries in return for an 8.5% consulting fee.

Sounds like good business to me.

After all, medical marijuana– in spite of whether you have a moral objection to it or not– undoubtedly has a market that isn’t going anywhere any time soon.

If Mobley is in fact the benefactor of the medical marijuana movement in the state as it is reported, his off-the-court financial success could easily surpass what he made during his time in the NBA.

After all, who said all pro athletes were simpletons who can’t take advantage of a business opportunity when they see it?

Cuttino Mobley certainly isn’t.
