As the Dallas Mavericks get ready for their first preseason game of 2013, they’ll have to do so without one of their big offseason acquisitions. After signing on for four years in the summer, long-time Toronto Raptor Jose Calderon is dealing with some hamstring pain and will sit out of the Mavericks preseason game with the new-look New Orleans Pelicans on Oct. 7. Calderon first suffered the injury in practice on Oct. 2 and has been limited since. The Mavericks want to remain cautious with their new point guard and may sit him out for majority of the preseason. ‘”We’ll need him on the 30th — that’s when we need him.,” Carlisle said. “But we’ve got to get him involved, but not at any kind of risk level that doesn’t make sense.”‘ (Full-Court Press, Star Telegram). Calderon spent most of the offseason with his home country Spain in the Euro Basket League, which concluded two weeks ago. ‘”We’ve got to make sure that he’s going at the right pace here,” Carlisle said. “We’ve got to understand that he’s been playing all summer — he was playing up until two weeks ago — wherever they were all over the world. There’s some grind to that. There’s some fatigue.”‘ (Full-Court Press, Star Telegram). Turning 32 on Sept. 28, the point guard is set to start for a Mavericks’ team that didn’t reach the playoffs last season, snapping a 12-year streak in which they did so. He’ll replace Mike James and Darren Collison, both of whom have moved on from the Mavs. James is in Chicago while Collison has joined the Clippers. Entering his 10th-NBA season, the Spaniard has career averages of 10.1 points, and 7.2 assists in 553 career regular-season games. He’s shooting 48 and 40 percent (field goal and 3-point), but did have career-highs in the two last season with Detroit with 52.7 and 52 percent respectively. Rookie Gal Mekel will likely start with Calderon’s injury. Devin Harris, who is in his second stint with Dallas, is still dealing with a toe injury.
