This year's MVP race has inspired a lot of heated commentary. Dirk Nowitzki and Steve Nash are generally considered to be the top two contenders, with Kobe Bryant an intriguing "third party candidate" based on his individual brilliance and his widely accepted status as the "best" player in the game--which many people do not necessarily equate with being the "most valuable" player. The heart of the question is not just who should win this year's award but how exactly should a player's value be defined.

  • My way of judging the MVP is if you take that player away, how bad would his team be without him. I think without Nash, the Suns are still a playoff squad, the Mavs a fringe playoff team, and the Lakers would be one of the 3 worst teams in the NBA. So barely, my MVP is Kobe unless something dramatic happens in the final few weeks left.
  • I would also vote for Kobe for MVP. I think that the award should go to the best player, period, and he has a complete game in terms of his footwork, his ball fakes, his rebounding, passing, shooting and defense. The "off court" numbers in this article reinforce your point about how dependent the Lakers are on Kobe, much more so than the Suns or Mavs are dependent on their superstar player.
