Reigning NBA MVP Derrick Rose sat out Tuesday night and now it is looking like he’ll miss another game on Thursday. Rose is currently out thanks to lower back spasms, and the Chicago Bulls have added point guard Mike James on a 10-day contract to help pick up the slack.

Rose claims he doesn’t know where the back issues came from but he has now missed three straight games. He saw a back specialist on Monday who confirmed the diagnosis of back spasms.

Rose was getting treatment on Wednesday and working with the same specialist, and it doesn’t look like he’ll be able to play Thursday night against the Boston Celtics, who beat the Rose-less Bulls on Sunday.

Without their star point guard the Bulls are 2-1, but those wins came against the Charlotte Bobcats (who are 3-26 on the season) and the Sacramento Kings (10-19). While Chicago has the depth to tread water without Rose, there is no way they can be a championship contender unless his back gets better.

Back spasms can be the sort of thing that pop up from time to time in athletes affected by them. In fact, they can be debilitating. Rose has to do whatever he can to get over this issue and fast, but the Bulls also can’t rush him back for fear of it becoming a recurring problem.
