BOSTON — Aside from LeBron James, Russell Westbrook might be the most polarizing player in the NBA. Basketball fans either love or hate the Oklahoma City guard and the constant frenetic pace at which he plays, with his detractors claiming he is not a pure point guard and his defenders insisting he brings a unique combination of talents to the position. Celtics coach Doc Rivers was tasked with drawing up a game plan to slow down Westbrook, as well as Kevin Durant, in Friday’s game against the Thunder. From the sound of it, Rivers is an unabashed Westbrook fan. “Westbrook’s a great player,” Rivers said shortly before tip-off. “That’s where I always leave it with him.” But that is not, in fact, where Rivers left it. He went on to recount a conversation he had with Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski, who coached Rivers’ son Austin last year. The legendary “Coach K” is also a Westbrook supporter, which might surprise the purists who decry the guard’s aggressive nature. “How many ‘Oh, [crap]!’

Celtics Locker Room Video: Doc Rivers Says Offensive Rebounding is the Least of the Celtics’ Worries

The Celtics lost to the San Antonio Spurs 112-100 tonight, being out-rebounded in the offensive glass by six to one. Doc Rivers, though, said he could not care less about the offensive rebounding numbers. Kevin Garnett, who finished the game with 14 points and three rebounds, had a few things to say about rebounding, too. [...]

State of the Team: Two sides of Westbrook

OKLAHOMA CITY Anyone who has a passing interest in the wide world of Westbrook knows the absolute paradox the Thunder point guard is. One of the best point guards in the league, Russell Westbrook frustrates as much as he fascinates. And anyone who has any knowledge of Westbrook knows you get what you get with him. Sometimes good, sometimes bad. He's always worthy of discussion...

Celtics Will Never Be Strong Offensive Rebounding Team Under Doc Rivers, By Design

BOSTON — Follow your shot. From high school to recreational leagues to AAU, the mantra of following your shot is ingrained in almost every basketball player. A player who puts up a shot and starts to retreat back down the floor usually can count on a quick hook from his or her coach. If the coach is Doc Rivers, though, he may clap. Rivers does not believe in the time-honored unwritten...

The players credit head coach Doc Rivers, who apparently stressed the importance of roles during the team’s Friday morning shootaround. Rivers didn’t discuss the meeting after the game — the players alluded...

Doc Rivers Spells Out Roles, Sets Tone for Celtics’ Statement Win Over Thunder

BOSTON — If Brian Butterfield is unavailable for any reason next summer, the Red Sox could always place a call to Doc Rivers. In the fourth quarter of Boston’s win on Friday, the Celtics coach resembled a third-base coach urging his team to continue pushing the ball against the reeling Oklahoma City Thunder. The only thing Rivers was missing was the exaggerated windmill motion...

Kevin Garnett Gets Shut Down ‘Like a Cellphone That You Buy at 7-Eleven,’ Doc Rivers Says

Celtics coach Doc Rivers has long been a proponent of limiting Kevin Garnett‘s minutes to keep the big man fresh throughout the season as the 18-year veteran logs more and more wear on his 36-year-old body. As Rivers explained Friday night after the Celtics held on to beat the Thunder 108-100, it’s not so much that he doesn’t like to play Garnett beyond his minutes total. The...

Rondo The Silent Killer: YOUR 2012-2013 NBA MVP

I just got back from an 8-hour drive this Saturday with only one thing on my mind…except for a couple X-rated things. I just wanted to sit on my couch, watch the Celtics play the not so exciting Raptors. Why would I be so enthralled over one lousy regular season game? The answer has two words.
