According to A Sherrod Blakely on CSNNE, Doc's hesitation to commit to coaching the Celtics next year isn't based on the return of Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett. Rather, Doc is waiting to see what type of team the Celtics will field. A league source told CSNNE.com on Monday that Rivers' decision on whether he will return will not be based solely on whether Paul Pierce and/or Kevin Garnett are back in next season. Rivers' hesitation to verbally commit to next season has more to do with his uncertainty as to what type of team Danny Ainge, Boston's president of basketball operations, will give him to coach. "No coach wants to go through a full-blown rebuilding process," said the source. "Doc's already done that, so he knows how tough that is for all involved. But to be asked to go through it twice? Any coach would pause for a minute before signing on to that." Rebuilding is tough on everyone, but especially coaches, who have a front-row seat to the drama and problems that unfold almost daily. The last thing Rivers wants to do at this point in his coaching career is go back to the days when the competition in practice was better than it was in games because players were willing to fight for minutes more than they were willing to fight for each other. Back in 2011 when Doc signed the 5 year, $35 million contract, making him the highest paid coach in the league, Doc had to know that there would come a time when KG and Pierce would retire and that he would face a rebuilding phase. If he didn't want to face a rebuild, he could have gone with 3 years to be safe. I just think that he knew that a rebuild would be probable during those 5 years of his new contract. For the record, the Celtics won't be terrible this season, but I don't think they will challenge for the championship whether or not Pierce and KG return. The Celtics will be mediocre this season. But there is a good chance that they can lure a star next season when they have cap room and they will also have some good young players around him. Personally I think Doc returns. He spoke of loyalty and the Celtics as a family when he signed the extension. If his words meant anything, a rebuild shouldn't be enough to change that. [Discuss on CG Forums!]
